Hello.
I've got a problem with the power steering on my omega. It works, but only at higher engine speeds. I've read the other messages on this forum, and VxON, and I think it's a tired power steering pump.
So, does anyone know the part number, and how much I can expect to pay?
Halfrauds have just quoted me over £200, so improvements on that would be good!
Oh, and the problem was caused by me showing off the advantages of rear wheel drive to my stupid hot hatch owning mates. Donuts- I like them, my car doesn't :-/

They do tend to be reasonably reliable, so maybe one from a known breaker may be better option, and cheaper?

If you get no joy there you could try EAC in Barking Essex, they are steering specialists & do recon pumps on 020 8591 6790. HTH

150 quid for one from Power Racks Direct.....but as said, they are pretty reliable so a good second hand unit would do the job nicely...

Mine's the same. I hadn't realised how heavy it was a slow speeds until I drove Phil's car when I did his HBV. I also know of another car that had a new pump fitted too (although the owner works at a Vx dealers and 'persuaded' Vauxhall to make a contribution! ;) ) so it's not entirely rare for them to fail. :(

This thread reminded me that when I cleared the shed out last week I found a bit (3/4 pint) of Dexron ATF, so I've just sucked out what I could from the power steering reservoir and topped up with new. The old fluid was a bit brown/'orrible loooking. :( Unfortunately it hasn't really made any difference. :-?

:) Thanks guys, I'm getting it fixed this week, going to have a recon unit fitted.
Only problem is when I dropped it off at my mates garage to be fixed we noticed a little oil leak around the rear of the head. Still, it might be ok just tightened up, failing that it'll be going back in next month to have new seals fitted.
Oh well, nobody said owning a car would be cheap or easy, but at least it's fun!

ATF leak or oil leak...?
If oil leak, that would be cam covers, search carefully in this forum for more info... in a nutshell use only GM gaskets, use the correct sealant in the correct place, tighten the covers to specified torque and clean the breathers...
But dont go on doing any dismantelling of other bits because the most likely cause of rear-engine oil leaks on the V6 is by far cam covers.
Oh, and make sure the PAS is topped-up with ATF to Dexron II spec, not Dexron III - Dexron III is apparently not compatible with the rubber seals used on the Omega and will cause leaks...

Had a similar problem on my v6 with poor power assistance at low speeds,was told itcould be a faulty relay in the driverside A pillar footwell,aparently vx have replaced relay for a new type to cure poor ps..Worth a look before condeming pump. :)

Overtightening the cam covers may damage them, and they are not cheap. Some bodge mechanics do this, and end up costing the customer a lot of dosh. They cam cover bolts should be 8Nm, no more...
