Gents,
I am looking at buying a 2.6 CDX with 92,000 miles and good service history. When I listened to the engine I noticed a ticking sound similar to the sound of tappets out of ajustment I used to here on old cars. These I believe have auto adjusting tappets (or whatever they are called now days). Is this anything to worry about and can it be sorted.
Thanks
Ong

Could be the hydraulic tappets need attention. Could be exhaust manifold/gasket.

Was the engine cold or had it warmed up fully?

The engine was fully warm. Test drove well. If it was an hyraulic tappet would this be easy to fix? I usd to change shims on my old Yamaha 1200. Would it be within DIY capability or a garage job?
Thanks

Sounds like the Exhaust manifold gasket to me! - when driving normally say 2k rpm in 4th was it silent?
If it is exhaust manifold gasket its a right biach on the V6!
Was the ticking comming from a particular side of the engine? - Drivers side is easier to do, passenger side is quite difficult.
Offically its an engine out job..... but i can be done without.

I agree re the exhaust manifold... as for the tappets, yes they are hydraulic so self-adjusting, and if the oil hasn't been changed for a long time or wrong viscosity used then they could suffer oil starvation and get noisy... if this is the case you may get away with a couple of thin oil changes, or even using Wynns additive, but if this does not help you will need to take the cams off and clean or replace the tappets. Not overly complicated, but very time consuming on the V6 with 2 heads, 4 cams and an intake plenum on top...

Just resurecting this one to save starting a new topic....
I fear the same has happened on my 2.5. It's ticking like a good 'un and sounding a bit throaty. Ticking is especially bad when staring up, or when nailing it, honestly I think I could be driving a tractor sometimes. Though when just gently easing it aliong 2 - 2.5k revs you can't hear it ticking very much.
I know it needs an oil & filter change, a bit overdue really (6.5k miles since last), but I fear it is the drivers side manifold gasket needs doing.
Are there any guides for the manifold gaskets on here?

Eighth dwarf:
A drivers side manifold gasket doesn't cost much in parts, perhaps £20 including new studs, it's just very fiddly.
You also risk shearing bolts. The heat shield bolts can go - not that bad. The manifold studs can go - very bad. The manifold to downpipe studs can go - bad.
You need to have a good look and see what state the various bolts are in.
If you can make it over to Long Ashton early evening I could venture an opinion.
-
I realise it won';t cost that much in parts, but was just wondering how fiddly it will be as I haven't had a really good look at whats involved and officially an engine out job I recall.
I'm guessing ramps axel stands and mostly done from underneath, but what has to come off to give access to it.
-
Passenger side is meant to be engine out, and quite frankly I think that might be the easiest way!!!
Drivers side is just fiddly. You need a good selection of sockets and extensions to get on to all the bolts. I think I used a 1/2" drive, 3/8" drive and 1/4" drive with all sorts of extensions.
A lot is from the top but you do need access from underneath as well. One axle stand would do it.
Not a lot has to come off really:
EGR
Secondary air injection pipe
Manifold heatshields
Unbolt the downpipe
Aux belt tensioner (optional I think)

Erm boys. I think we are forgetting that little matter of the water sodding pipe. You know, the one that is designed to be the biggest nightmare to get at where it joins the REAR of the block in such a way that you really can break your wrsists getting at it.
In actual fact, the drivers side manifold gsaket isn't that bad. It is a big job and not for the feint hearted really, but can be done easily in a coupld of hours.
Laidback and I are doing a couple this weekend I suspect. Funily enough we both agreed that we would rather change another gearboc than fo a manifold gasket.
Anyway, the tapping noise is probably hydraulic tappets. As mentioned above, first things first, a coupld of oild and filter chages straight away and then if needed, out with the tappets and a vice, One MarksDTMCalib and some repriming of them should do the job.

Thats good to know, as funnily enough..... ;)

Ah b*gger - well spotted Mr MacB.
I think I must have blocked that water pipe out of my mind. To remove it properly is plenum off, intake manifold off, coolant bridge off....
I actually cheated and undid it blind by hugging the gearbox - very fiddly.
