Started the the old timing belt job last night and found the culprit of my idle woes. Firstly the aircon system pressure is low and when I turn on ECO mode it goes away... :)
I wondered if it was connected to the problem I had of when accelerating hard the engine would go ok but it was not until hitting 4.5k+ revs that it really kicked in.
It would seem that the timing was well out on the marks. 3-4 cams were only slightly out but 1-2 was nearly 1cm retarded off the mark !!! Hopefully when I finish it off tonight it will seem a lot better.
Any experts want to put their 2pence in on this?

1cm - would that be 2 or 3 teeth out?
The 4k thing does suggest front multiram not working properly... ...easily tested...
-
Actually is sudgests rear multiram not working.....

4k surge?
I've got a lot to learn :-[

How do I test for this and how would I rectify the problem?
I take it you mean the thing at the back of the plenum? That opens at 4.5k but the one below the intake horns does not move...

I would in no way contradict Marks_DTM, but my feeling is the front one. Marks_DTM did a poll a couple of months back to check if vac tanks one way valve was knackered, may be worth checking that out if yours has the vac tank there...
-
Mark_DTM is right, if its above 4100rpm, then that is point rear opens. Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 is where front opens....
-
Well I can tell you from previous tests that it doesnt move at all. What should I check for to diagnose the problem?
-
Just checked my one way valve as per the dvd and I can suck a bit if air through making a squealing noise!!
Poo - is this the cause of my problems? How difficult is it to find a replacement?

Bloody Heck, my 1 + 2 were about 3mm out and now pretty smack on, I've noticed the difference in acceleration already... So 1cm, that's 10mm in Imperial ;D

I tested this too and got a strange noise like some kind of horn. Mark assured me it was normal though.

I have just taken the car on a long drive and the hesitation before 4.5k revs has reduced considerably now that the timing is correct. So it would seem the valve isnt to blame.
The idle problem is still there but once I get my aircon regassed I will report on progress.
Many thanks for all you help guys! :y
