i have a strange one...while driving on the motorway, and sometimes on the b roads.
the engine seems to tap really loudly when im just cruiseing-just feathering the throttle.
as soon as i give it some gas it stops, likewise when im breaking(using the engine to slow down)
sounds like if the tappets aren't under pressure(load) there tapping real bad.
Any ideas??

Leaking exhaust manifold gasket?
If the tapping is also evident while idling, can you indentify if it is coming from one side of the engine?

By the way, I drove through Halstead today on the way to Sudbury and again on the way back...

hmmm ... I'm wondering if it could also be to do with the EGR as that activates on part throttle ... ??

Any particular rpm - thinking along lines of a resonance type rattle, eg heatshields...

will check the exhaust gaskets,it is strange as it does only happen when at revs between 2,000 rpm -3,500 rpm. usually on the motorway.
yes to the EGR valve symptoms-only at part acceleration it taps.
bugging me though as its getting louder and more concerning

Try blanking the EGR valve, that will eliminate it.
