Post by: mv6copcar on 08 May 2007, 22:36:25
hi people, just a quick one, does anyone know if welding up my rear diff will result in faster and uneven rear tyre wear?

regards

Yes, but the tyre wear will be the least of your worries. It'll make it undriveable on the road due to the need for the rear wheels to rotate at different speeds when negotiating corners.

I beg to differ on the whole "undriveable bit" :-[

Not undriveable but not pleasent would be a better explantion ;D

i used mine on the road briefly with a welded diff......... round corners you have the sensation that its trying to understeer and in fact it is.... UNTILL you stick your foot down and you get buckets of OVERSTEER :y dont get me wrong loads of fun BUT the damage it causes to other things and noises it makes :'(

tyre wear major issue ... either scrubs tyres to pieces or you simply burn them up as you have more fun sideways.

when turning corners slowly there are bangs, crunch's and even HOPS :'( so parking in tesco's isn't easy anymore......

diff mounting takes a hammering as there is no give and trys to twist it up totally.......

So in my opinion a welded diff - YES loads of fun , more grip in straight line initially, and if drifting/sideways is your thing .. so controllable :y

on a road car NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!!!!!!! imagine a corner of the M25 @ 70mph.... the car would be trying to go sideways then.....and that would prob end in tears :'(

buy a 2nd hand diff weld that up and just swap them if you want a bit of fun ........ if not source an LSD diff.. not as good but still loads of fun :y

OK. I've never tried it but having strayed onto tarmac in a 4x4 with the diff locks on it's not something that I'd do out of choice and sympathy for the mechanical bits had me unlocking the diffs pretty quick!

If road use is important I'd suggest a decent LSD.

a 4x4 with locked diffs must be a complete pain in the ass!!! :o

but yes i agree lsd the way forward.. grab 1 from a cop car!! as long as its a manual cop car :y
