Title: Gearbox change, what's wrong
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 11 May 2007, 01:41:38
Had a semi-sucesfull night tonight, only semi though. Not sure why people thought Markie was working with me tonight though, I've been working alone since 8pm, and at 1:34 I'm calling it a night.

I thought I would take Matchless's advice, and remove the Torque converter, and fit it inside the new box.

1) Got the old box off and out of the way - no hassle at all

2) Removed Torque converter from engine

3) Inserted torque converter into new gearbox

4) After trial and error, manage to get the box pretty stable on 2 jacks, ready to mate up to the engine. Get it lining up, and the box mates up with the block. It would seem that when I am doing up the bolts, it is pulling the bellhousing in evenly, but isn't mating as easily as I'd have thought.

5) Now I've actually got the box mated up to the engine, I thought, best get those 6 bolts back in the TC. HOWEVER - here is the problem

The TC obviously isn't lining up with the bolt holes on the drive plate... so I thought, best turn engine then. Get a ratchet on the crank pulley... and it's stuck solid... I can't turn it at all!!

What have I done wrong, I'm really disheartened at the moment, maybe it will seem better after a lye-in

How much trouble is it really.. to leave the TC attached to the engine, and then mate up the box?

Or, if that's not the right way.. what the heck am I doing wrong?

:(

Could I have the wrong TC? I used the original TC from the Elite - should I have used the one that came with the new box?

(Mark and Dave may know what I mean here!)

Wouldn't have thought that would stop the engine turning though

I need to vacate this barn by 10pm.. so only one day to get this sorted :(

Well, if something has jammed the driveplate it needs to come out again for a look, unfortunately. While you're there, check the TC does mate up to the driveplate OK and compare the two TCs. Maybe there are differences.

Is the TC definately fully home on the gearbox splines?

It might be worth leaving the bell housing loose until all the moving parts are aligned and connected and then tightening them as a last stage. That way you can wiggle it around if need be.

Sounds to me like the TC is not correctly engaged with the dogs on the gearbox.....did the bell housing mate upto the engine ok with no gap without using the bolts to pull it up?

Yep, sounds like you got the splines to engage but not the dogs so the TC is not going far enough onto the gearbox shaft.
Hope thats all it is.......and imagine trying to align this with the TC already bolted to the driveplate.

Nope.. it neede the bolts to pull it in...

right

I just removed the gearbox, and reseated the TC back in it. It went as far back as it could go, well behind the bellhousing.

Refitted to engine, and got all the TC bolts in through the drive plate

Yet, when the bellhousing is tightened, the engine won't turn

Release it about 3mm, and it its fine

HELP!!!

Still sounds like the dogs arnt engaged.

to test it, fit the tc one spline out and note how far in it goes then try it with the dogs aligned, should go in 5 - 6 mm further. Just check the slots are both the same width, I dont think these are different but sometimes you get one wide slot and one narrow.
