Got my eye on a 3.2 elite 53 model as a second car, only got 36000 on the clock, its on sale for £9,000.
I love my omegas but my local mechanic says stay away from the V engines, he has me now thinking do I, or dont I, he said they are pigs to work on and cost lots to repair.
What would have caused him to say that, is there an history with the engines, is he correct and what do you think of his comments.
:o :( :'( :)

My initial instinct is its quite pricey - I would have guessed more like 7k for a car that age. perhaps more if its an estate. (not that I'm an expert - I have not paid half that for any of mine)
Probably needs a cambelt change imminently (40k) but garage/owner will probably swear blind it is not due until 80k.
The V6's are more complex to work on than 4 pots, mainly due to access, but I wouldn't be put off if its a good example. There are guides on here for most of the common tasks.
Good Luck

Thanks, I thought the price may have been a little over, not that much as the car is in pristine condition, I have seen other 3.2 elites on 52 plates going for about 7 grand.
Thanks for your reply.

Could be - as said I'm no expert at all. Sounds like a cracking motor anyway.
Cheers

i think there's gonna be more advice on here as to why you should get one as opposed to why you shouldn't. Alot of people on here know their omegas, and know what it takes to look after one properly to keep repair bills to a minimum

Change mechanics.
It will be due a new cambelt kit (4yrs/40k). Don't let your local mechanic do it, as obviously he is not familar with the GM V6 unit.

fwwwaaaarrr sounds very nice to me!
I'll soon be in the market for a 2.6/3.2 elite, although to me i think 9k is a bit on the steep side... saying that isn't the 3.2 elite sought after motor, so maybe it can demand that sort of dosh?
Is it manual?

No 3.2 is manual, unless ex-plod...

Ah thats handy to know. Quite fancy a 3.2 once I get used to the fuel consumption of the 2.5 ;) Ive owned my V6 all of a month and done a fair bit of work on it - cam gaskets / exhausts etc. From my point of view its a nice motor and OK access is not always easy but nothing in there to run away from.

...... and OK access is not always easy but nothing in there to run away from.
There's more access under the bonnet than on many transverse engined cars.
Have you seen under the bonnet of a Mitsubishi FTO Mivec? Front 3 plugs ... piece of cake. The back 3 you need a week off work to change 'em! :(
-
I'm very happy with my 3.2. I've found overall fuel consumption is about 26 / 27 on my commute with the odd bit of playing around. On a motorway cruise it'll do 33 if you're sensible.
I think it's just the "can't be arsed" factor that makes some mechanics dislike them. Yes, access to things can be tricky and the cam belt change takes practice but at that mileage it ought not to want too much attention for a good while, cam belt at 40K excepted. The 2.6/3.2 also has a bit less gubbins to get in the way under the bonnet, since it doesn't have EGR, air injection or a throttle cable!
If that price is from a dealer with warranty I'd say it's OK. When I was looking, price increased sharply with decreasing mileage. I think low mileage Omegas are getting to be in short supply. There was certainly a 3.2 elite on a 52 plate with mid 40's on the clock for 9K when I was looking back in December / January time.

No not familiar with that, but Im currently working on a lotus esprit engine in the garage. Now I understand what the lotus position is ;D and yes, the Omega is much better than some...

No, I mean that no 3.2 is manual, rather than no, 3.2 is manual
Sorry for any confusion...

Chuffin hec, now my head hurts... i got the idea though!

1. GM V6 no problem at all... go for it, you'll enjoy every minute.
2. If you are not interested, pass-on the details... I'm looking to replace mine, reason I haven't done so already is that mine is a 2001 with 50k so it's not worth replacing unless I find a 2003 with less mileage...

Ahhh...i see what you meant now....in other words all 3.2's are auto's unless ex-plod.

Afraid not..........would have been nice to get, but I'd been searching for two months, and couldn't pass on the price considering the silly prices advertised for 03/53 Elites. Don't use SatNav much anyway...

Can be retro fitted to a car with NCDC series stereo for about £300 ish from ebay.de, though ensure that the screen is in 'Delivery Mode'. Carpass needed, and a chat with a Tech2...
