hi all,i have a 2001 2.6 mv6 that makes a tapping noise(quite loud) when its started up from cold, its comming for the top of the engine but the noise only lasts a couple of minutes and doesnt return until it has gone cold again, mate said it could be a sticking valve, anyone had similar problems or have any idea what it could be,as you can tell im no good with cars and am worried it might blow up lol
cheers

blown exhaust manifold, or more likely the manifold gasket
-
thanks theboy, not sure tho,its more of a knocking noise rather that a blowing noise

Dont rule it out though, leaking exhaust manifolds/ gaskets can sound just like an engine tap - easy to misdiagnose these if youve not heard it before. Just a thought.
-
many thanks cdx
-
usually, the blow sounds like tappets, until the manifold warms up.
-
we had a shogun in the garage and the customer was convinced something was broken inside the head and sure enough the exhaust manifold was fractured...sounded like a broken follower...never assume the worst
-
if it is a manifold problem or needs new gasgets,is it a big expensive job?

v6 or 4 pot. If v6, which side?
-
its the v6,cant tell side the noise is comming from

Drivers side not too bad, passenger side more of a challenge!
-
any idea of the costs from a garage?
thanks for your help btw

You need to prove it is that first. I would attempt to locate which side - if drivers side, consider having a go. If passenger side, probably easier to remove the head?
Garage costs are likely to be high.

Manifold gasket about £6. Timewise? Drivers side about 3 hours, passenger side about 2 hours BUT you need to shift the enigine over with a crane or jack for the passenger side.

you could try putting some wyns hydralic lifter oil if it is the lifters, works wonders and it about a fiver from halfords and this should elimanate the tappets from your searching and if you are doing it yourself try auto vaux for the parts they qouted me £10 cheaper than vaux main dealer with postage

Sorry mate, I can't agree.
Stay away from oil additives at all costs :( :y

it worked on mine and you put it in drive for a few hundred miles then do an oil change, its designed to remove all the crap from inside the hydralic lifters so they can fill up properly and stop the tapperty noise, i dont run the engine with it in just used it to clean out the tappets then replaced oil and filter with vauxhall stuff
-
I'm with JamesV6CDX on that one, partly because using engine flush type stuff is potentially risky for the engine, but also because using this cleaning stuff isnt a sure fire fix anyway- what Im saying is that unless you are lucky and it fixes it then its diagnostic value is a bit iffy. Can you rule out the manifold first?

Get a length of rubber tube, stick one end in an ear 'ole and poke the other end all around the suspect gasket, if it is the gasket or a cracked manifold then you should hear it quite clearly.
