Title: spanner light on + no power
Post by: tunnie on 24 May 2007, 16:10:25
At my grandparents in Surrey today, decided to pop out. Started the Omega, got the coolant warning on the MID and the revs were unusually high at 1,300 rpm.

Odd i thought, switched off, pop bonnet and check coolant, was fine no probs.

Started again, no coolant message, but still odd revs, 1,300 ish. The light with the spanner though the roof remained on, if i pressed the gas pedal, NOTHING happend  :o

Put it into gear, try to go... nothing...

Off and on again, still the same.

Let it run for a few minites (temp went up to 75ish), still no change. Switched off and had a quick converstation with Jaime... during the  converstation, I started it again. Sods law it started fine, spanner light went out, reved fine.

Left it for 5 mins, switched off, and it started fine. Went to Hayes and back run smoothly no problems.

Maybe thinking MAF Sensor? or Lamda ? (hope not!)

Going to get the codes read tonight.... anyone else got any thoughts?

Tunnie I would not think its your lambda i ran mine for ages without the lambda working and it was not bad at all apart from running rich all the time. i dont think you would get your problems with a knacked lambda.

What about a crankshaft or knock sensor ?

phew, was not looking forward to replacing lambda...

Battery voltage high? - I have a weak connection from the alternator, where the loom crimps onto the battery connector. If anything i would have thought it would be low.

Thottle body cleaned out about 8 months ago... not done many miles since.

I thought crank sensor = no running + stalling?

I'll post up codes later... must get myself a code reader.

If the throttle does nothing I wonder if the DBW throttle system is going into limp-home?

I presume it is DBW?

As discussed, even though its working now, get the codes read as a first port of call.  You really need to fix the battery connection as well, as I doubt your battery is charging properly, and that really isn't going to help.

Agreed, trouble is i don't have the tools to properly re-crimp the wire. Going to take it to that guy in town after my trip this weekend. Also if that Estate Facelift oil cooler project is still around (which i highly doubt) would go after that too.

If fin lends me some money  ;)  ;D

I believe that I am correct in saying that on the 2.0 and 2.2 engines, the camshaft and crankshaft sensors work together.  If one fails, then the ECU substitutes pre programmed values for it and hence the engine keeps running.  It should not, though, exhibit the same symptoms as you have though.

I know that when the cam sensor went in my Cav (as it has several times) the engine was down on power and was reluctant to rev, but it was drivable.
