I take it that it is petrol? What is the milage?
It could be your valve stem oil seal's have broken down. Some of the other members on here might say the same or differ.

Hi yes its petrol and its done 97,565 miles and I have just been told it is burning oil

Then you need to remove the head and replace the valve stem oil seals. Wait STOP!!!! first check the breather pipe coming fromthe bottom of the crankcase which is situiated to the right of the engine (as looking from the front of the car) and you should see a angled hose connected to it which goes to the cam cover. Check this first to see if it is clocked up with carbon if it is it will need cleaning, then purchase a filter which goes inline in between the hose. I had the same problem with an Omega I had and took the head off thinking it was the piston rings until a freind that was helping me said " You have drained the oil haven't you?" I said yes and he replied then why is there oil sitting on top of the pipe? I then removed it and cleaned it out. Didn't need to remove the head but still replaced the oil stem seals and all the seals and head gasket as well. Didn't have the problem after that.
So be very thorough before starting to remove the head first and check all pipes and clean if needed thats the cheaper way first, if they don't need cleaning or ublocking then head off. Good luck in your findings and keep us all posted.

...and I have just been told it is burning oil
By whom, and how did he/they arrive at this conclusion?

The obvious first check is the breather system. Get this cleaned out completely before doing anything else.
-
Has it got a new exhaust.......
Are the breathers clean.
Bore and stem seal wear on the V6 is almost unheard off (unlike the 4 pots)

I agree, valve stem oil seals are hard to diagnose without removing the heads. Once you have cleaned the breathers there is a test you can perform. Firstly take out all your spark plugs (empty of any oil first with a syringe or similar). If they have all light tan/brown depostits your car is running perfectly and I would think your smoke is just conensation. If one or two of them have a completelty wet black look I would suspect these cylinders and follow the instruction below:
Remove fuel pump relay and depressurise fuel system.
Perform the compression test. If pressure ok carry on, if not your problem is elsewhere (HG or piston rings)
Take off cam cover(s)
Take out air inlet system to gain access to pulley.
With a helper, rotate the engine while slowly pouring oil over the inlet and exhaust valve tappets which were suspect.
Put it all back to gether, remove excess oil by draining and start her up.
If you get a huge billow of blue/grey smoke on startup its likely to be your valve stem oil seals. If not look elsewhere.
There are ways of changing these seals without taking the head off. You need a spark plug air valve (will take photos and post them later) whip off the cams and tappets, then pressurise the cylinder with your spark plug air valve and with your helpful volunteer compress the spring and take off the collets. You can then take off the suspect seal and (carefully) replace them. If you are removing all four cams I would rotate the crank for each cylinder so that each one is TDC when you are working on it so that if the valve does drop it can be retained without having to take off the head anyways.
If this is what you want to do I can give a hand if you are near S. Wiltshire.

Hi to all
My breather is clear, but my oikld was black and like water, just gave it a oil change, been out for a good run, and no more smoke.
Thanks for all of you help.

If I have said it once I have said it a thousand times.....prove the simple stuff before running down blind alleys... :y
It sounds actualy like the oil was to thin, has it been miss firing or running on fault codes and suffered fuel contamination?

Hi it was running fine before, just smokey :D
