Hi there
How many Ltrs of anti-freeze/water mix do put in my 2.0, haynes states 8.6 Ltrs but when I drain and re-fill to flush, I can only get about 6 Ltrs back in. is there 2 Ltrs that stay in the system. I changed the water pump when I did the cam belt a few weeks back and a load of coolant came out at that point after I had drained. Also do I need a 50/50 mix at this time of year.
Many thanks for your help, past and presant

HI Lyn,
The recommendation is 50% all year round (for the corrosion inhibitor to work at best).
I seem to recall juist getting over 6 litres in my 2L. I can't recall the total capacity, although from memory I thought I had drained just about what Haynes said the capacity was. You sure you're not looking at the 2.5/3.0 cpacity?
Cheers

Thanks Ian
Haynes: 8.8L for a 2.0 SOHC, 8.6 for a 2.0 DOHC and 9.5 for 2.5 and 3.0. So I will put about 4L in mine 2.0 DOHC auto. I just wanted to make sure.
Thank again

I'm just in the middle of doing my 2.2. First flush took about 5l. 2nd go took 6l after pumping the radiator top hose.
Does your Haynes have a capacity for a 2.2 Lyn?
If not I'd assume it to be the same as a 2.0 ish :-/

it will be the same and anything over half the amount coming out is a good sign.
The v6 for example takes just over 9 litres and youd be lucky to get any more than 5 litres out.
Approx half of the coolant will be down passed thermostat and water pump...

Hi Chopsdad
No, my haynes only dose the 2.0 and 2.5,3.0 V6 from 1994 to 1999.
Sorry :(

So is it best to flush and refil with 50/50 mix a few times or just fill it with 4l of neat coolant when the water runs clear??

50/50 mix every time ( long life pink anti freeze)
I do about 4 flushes on the v6. the idea being that each time you do it and run the engine for a minute or so ( remembering to put coolant cap on and tighten bleed valve each time )it dilutes with the old stuff. after 4 flushes you should have all the old stuff out and the new stuff should have a nice pink tinge in your header tank.
You may want to increase the 50/50 mix for the final flush to say 60/40 in favour of anti freeze but i wouldnt put it in neat.

I've always just calculated how much antifreeze I need to get a 50/50 mixture, flushed until clear so I know there's only water in there, added the correct amount of neat antifreeze and topped up with water if necessary. That way you don't have to flush away any more antifreeze than you have to, you don't end up wasting fresh antifreeze and it all gets mixed up pretty quickly once you run the engine anyway.

I just finnished doing mine, I let all water out with the red valve at the bottom of the rad and then I left a water hose in the expantion tank for about 10 mins, then I shut off the valve left it fill with water and then run for about five mins with the fans on full, drained and did the same three times. when the water comming out was nice and cleare, I shut the valve off and put 4L of red anti-freeze then toped up with water. I dont know if this is the right way, but I had fun doing it.
Good luck :y

That's the way I've done it too. I'd run it up to temperature afterwards for a bit to make sure its all mixed up.

Thanks guys. I got impatient so followed Tunnie's guide. 50/50 mix 5l. Ran engine and let it all out. Refilled 50/50 again and this time got over 6l in so strength should be ok.
It's off to the garage next week for an oil change (cheap way of getting my service log stamped) so I'll get them to test it when it's in and top up as necessary. :y
