1997 3.0i saloon auto
140000 miles
On breaking car is squeaking and whining pads changed 6 months ago inc sensors which have not stated a problem with the pads.
Also when I have come to a stop from speed the auto box is "lurching" forward into 1st gear.
Any thoughts on either problem??

Squealing brakes is due to one or both of the following: (a) pads fitted wrong way round – there is an arrow showing the direction of rotation for the inner pads, (b) backs of pads were not coated with anti-squeal copper grease.
With automatic transmission the car should crawl forward when in drive and at idle, but should stand still when facing uphill on a moderate gradient.

Brakes, if there are plenty of meat and disks are good, I wouldn't sweat too much if it stops well, mine was squeaking like mad last week! I put it down to weather :-X
As far as the gearbox goes, I've seen this prob several times. In most cases, it's been poor fluid in the box or incorrect fluid level.
First of all, make sure the fluid level is sufficient by following Mark's guide in the maintenance section on the forum.
If that doesn't fix it - do an ATF fluid change and see if that makes a difference. While doing this, Look in the sump, for traces of thrust washers :(

Brakes, assuming correctly fitted, probably missing antisqueal compound.
Autobox, replace fluid and see what happens...
