Title: Something not right at the front right wheel
Post by: kcl on 05 June 2007, 20:03:44
Here are the current findings: something is "loose" in right front wheel. Bearing changed, no affect. Slight play can be felt by taking the wheel from up and down, but when shaking it with hands on front-rear sides of tyre nothing. Steering arms etc. seem to be ok, also no noticable play in lower arm ball joint. Is it the lower arm bushings, lower arm ball or has the hub it self (the axle) come to the end? Only 150k kilometres on the clock...

Also found lately it pullling to the right (it's the safe way here... ), this is a new symptom. Wheels aligned last winter, same tyres as last summer etc...

Does it rattle as you go over any kind of bump? Mine was the drop link. Try bouncing that corner but instead of pushing down on the wing lift it up from the wheel arch. That's how I found my rattle.

Wishbones have not yet been done, though it seems unlikely, cause wishbones should not give any feeling of play in the wheel. No ratltle nor clunks going over bumps, no vibration while driving, just a slight play in the wheel. If it was still the bearing it would give a play in both directions (ref. gripping the wheel from up-down and from front-rear)?

Worn wishbone bushes will give some play in the 3-9 Oclock positions because the wheel will pivot on the track arm....

Just a thought. Have you checked the strut bearing. Due to my poor description Its the part the the suspension leg attaches too. Large type bush attached by three nuts secure it to body. Visible from within engine bay. Due to mileage dome maybe worth a look

Have to try the wishbones, but still, the play is quite obvious in 12-6 direction, 3-9 Oclock nothing. Strut bearing also a possibility, but I dont think it's likely that... I wonder that there are no clunks or any other strange sounds...and also I'm wondering why the car pulls...or am I dreaming  ::)

Try checking the lower ball joint that connects from wishbone to hub carrier if it's shot you can replace the ball joint by drilling out the rivets and fitting a new one that bolts on, but if your wishbones are also suspect may be worth changing them as new wishbones come with ball joint fitted, also check that the strut to hub carrier bolts are tight.
