Hi all
I know this might sound dumb! but how do you do a 'drilled airbox?'
Is it anygood? or should i leave well alone?
At the moment ive got a universal air filter (cone type) on it which dont really make much difference in the performance stakes but it does make a great roaring sound,I get a lot of looks from boy racers!! I love it!!!!!!!!!
Which is better then?
Just thought Id tell ya that Ive never had any probs with the engine management light coming on

generally the aim is to get cold air into the engine; drilling the box would mean warm air from engine heat will enter.... cone type filters have an oily coating that lines the MAF and kills it which is why they say you shouldnt use one.
i personally wouldnt drill the air box... a cold air intake (CAI) is much better; you could house your cone filter or fabricate a heat sheild around it & couple it with a CAI... hwoever there generally isnt much of a performance change with the cone type filters just a better noise that plays mind tricks with some peeps to think there is a difference.
if you are going to drill; dont drill above the filter as that means some of the air isnt going to be filtered.

Perfomance wise, as the OE filter is so big, other induction kits do not increase performance, and in many cases actually lower it (though the noise will make you think otherwise).
If it is purely the noise you're after, then a cone and a fabricated sheild to only allow cold air in is the way to go. Warm air from the engine bay will harm performance.

I appreciate that some may think I'm mad and wasting my time and money BUT what I did with my Vectra Sri and now my Omega 2.5 is to encase the Induction Kit filter/cone BACK INSIDE the original airbox's. Sound wise its hard to know, there certainly isn't the roar that normal goes along with them, BUT I'm confinced I get better performance...plus my insurance didn't go up. I told them what I'd done and they made a note of it BUT because the Induction Cone wasn't on the outside, they dismissed it.
If you have an induction fit fitter you are supposed to tell your insurance company. If you don't they won't honour any claims you make...especially given that if you have a bad smack, writing the car off, the insurance companies inspectors will see the kit fitted and they won't pay you a dime.

thing is, the original filter is hard to beat performance wise :)

the kit i found worked best for me and up my calibra by about 5 bhp is the viper kit by pipercross its in cased so no heat to sap power but at 200 it pricey

No disrespect but if an induction kit does nothing to up the performance then why do it?
I can understand body kits and spoilers as they add something.... :-?

Lack of noise is one of the main things that attracted me to the Omega. If it's noise you want, get a 1997 Renault Laguna with 137,000 miles and replace the exhaust from cat back with the cheapest system you can buy. Worked for me :y
