Title: possible newbie question on breathers !!!
Post by: Skanky on 12 June 2007, 21:06:54
hi all

going to be doing a cam belt change, water pump , and rocker gasket change in the next week, with the help of all the guides and the dvd from robin hood( came today, cheers RH  ;) )

Just wanted to ask about the breathers, what do they look like and whats the best way of cleaning them?
some say compressed air others say a pin and some solvent based cleaner.
Ive probably seen them in every guide ive looked at just not put the name to the part !

Anyway !

Hi Skanky. I take it you're talking about a V6. Have a look here:

And carb cleaner is the stuff to use. About £10 from Halfords, or £3 - £4 from motor factors. Get a couple of cans though, and don't be shy with using it ;)

But according to the post about doing the breathers if i remember correctly if you use a lot of carb cleaner you will need to change the oil....
Make sure you clean out the top breathers, (with ECOTEC on the top) there are four small holes that are in an upside down turret that goes into the Plenum, mine were blocked up.......
When you have done the breathers you will hear them sucking :y

... I seem to remember using about 4 or 5 cans of the stuff on my current one ... and I'd say it wasn't as bad as some ...

The 'breathers' are not a part as such, more a network of hoses/pipes/channels.
You need to make sure to clean
- the black Ecotec bit (I found an old bike spoke quite useful and you can blast through with water/air afterwards)
- the throttle body (not strictly the breather but needs doing and you will have it off the plenum anyway)
- the 4 (3 actually - as one is Y shaped) off the back.  If these are really bad - they sort of go mushy, I would consider replacing them - only a few quid.
- the three ports on the 2 boxes down the back - that's where the pin/nail comes in, but be careful as there are inards that you don't want to damage.   I used the guide on here to do mine - should all make sense when you get there.

And make sure you do this at the same time or before you replace the cam cover seals or they will just go again.
One other tip from my experience - make sure you have a torque wrench available that goes down to 8Nm - you need this for the camcover bolts.

worth changing spark plugs too while you are in there..

Good Luck,
Ian
