Just bought a Tech2 scanner interface from the States, but turns out to be serial connector on the end of cable and my Laptop only has USB connecters, I'm going to purchase an adapter any suggestions on best one to get? and software that came with it has ' AutoScannerOpel' on it along with another called Opel-tech2, has anyone used any of these with any success? via USB
cheers Pete

Very hit and miss on USB. I got it to work, but I don't think anyone else has...

You say a bit hit and miss , in what way? and you say you got it to work how did you do it and what software did you use . Sorry about all the questions

I think they work better with the 2.2 as after 2001 + / - VX was EOBDII compatible from
my understanding --- may be corrected???

I had a USB cheapoT2 for a while, then sent it back for a serial port one. The software was crap in either case but the USB one was a right hassle to set up (it had me mucking around with system settings and virtual com ports etc) and then was unreliable when connecting. The serial port one is better in that respect...

The hungarian software only seems to work on COM1. Even if you can get your adapter to be COM1, there will be 3 outcomes:
1) It simply won't work. End of.
2) It will be intermittent.
3) It will work as expected (this is buggy software, so crashes frequently anyway).
Hope that makes sense?
With luck, it will just work :)

Ok thanks mate , hopefully I'll get some success once I get the adapter, incidently do you know of any other software that is fairly useable other than this Hungarian one?
cheers Pete

Can I ask what its called and where did you get it?. The autoscannerOpel software looks to be very good, able to do all sorts of things like reprogram keys etc. Mind you I haven't tried it! ;D

I 've got a Opel AutoScanner work fine!
Costs is about £250. Also been getting updates for it.
The interface has a serial number it will only work with software with the same serilal number.
Seen some copies but got a very earlier version of the software - wiyh no updates.

Got interface and software from a company called Casual fashion on Ebay and managed to get serial to usb adapter today , so shall try it all out, not sure if the Opelautoscanner software is going to work as I'm now wondering if it's a copy and not serialised to interface.

I did a bit of mucking about with the data files that the software uses to try and get it to give me more meaningful advice (ie more English and less Hungarian!) I changed quite a few things and then got fed up with it.
Forgot to say, I updated the USB/Serial port driver to the latest version and this helped get the USB side of things to work. As TB says though, you have to hook it to COM1 even if the interface will seemingly accept other ports.

Does anyone have an idiot guide to getting this interface to work; I've set usb port to Com1 and enabled it gone in to the opel software and selected vehicle etc and it comes up at the bottom of the screen something to do with communications, I presume it's trying to talk to the ecu but nothing really happens, the OpelAutoscanner software is no good either as that just says I've used it too many times and to contact vendor, at the moment I'm beginning to think this is the biggest pile of S***e I can remember buying in a long time, so if any of you guys can help it would be appreciated or the thing gets binned!!!

As TB says trying to usb-serial convertors to work with this device is a pain......i bought a convertor and gave up with it.....instead bought a docker for my labtop that had a serial port......this works just fine for me....
OpelAutoscanner software.....i think uses serial no of hardware....and will be no good with a cheapo tech2...if thats what you've got :-/

Sounds about right. It only works on real com ports (usb adapters don't always have fully serial functionality, and those that do are processor intensive). I got it working, but only just, even on my P4 2Ghz laptop, it ran like a dog using a usb adapter

Pete, if you like I can send you the updated version I messed with - including the later USB drivers if you like. Every chance it will be just as reluctant to work but you may be lucky. PM me your email address if you want to give it a go.
