Title: Dis Pack Replaced....but
Post by: Markie on 14 June 2007, 23:38:56
Okay a rapid dispack change tonight on Bob Dents old estate due to a water pump failure on my wifes car....

Bearing in mind before dis was replaced i inspected the rocker covers ( bone dry as done a year ago) I also ensured the spark wells were free of oil and water.

Last week i cleaned the breathers and idle control valve along with throttle bodies.

Old Dispack upon inspection was very badly corroded. Certainly the major problem lies with that!

Now its replaced i still feel the car is a little flat and ( just maybe) still has a slight miss - although nowhere as bad.

Its hard to tell cos i havent driven a manual for years and not sure if i sometimes just have it wrong gear.

What i have noticed is it idles just over 500rpm and occasionally jumps up 100 or so revs before returning to just over 500rpm - when it jumps up theres little phut phut phut noises from the exhaust. Dipping the throttle indicates there s still prhaps a slight miss...

Any thoughts? clean breathers again? retrace steps for air getting in?

What does everyones elses 2.5 manuals tick over at and what would cause the intermittant increase ( but never decline ) in revs?

My 2.5 (auto) rpm runs 500 rpm normally but increases 100 revs or so intermittently due to (I think) 'idle-up' when the AC is on whch would seem to be normal behaviour.  But that doesnt explain the phut-phut / slight miss though...

I've found that any slight leak in the exhaust tends to give a false impression on misfires and the like.  Would sort the 'phut phut' first, even with gungum in the short term and see whats happening thereafter.

Blip the throttle, you should see them move...

Right this one is starting to annoy me  >:(

Dispack changed and to be honest its not much better. I cant see front multi ram move but thought it had to rev circa 4000rpm ( 2man job)

Car seems to hesitate much more up to 3000revs. Afterwards its not bad at all. Theres a definate " blip" at the start of the throttle.

Fuel consumption is good and fuel filter is resonably new as is air filter.

Plug wells are as dry as a bone - cam covers done 18 months ago ( no signs of any seepage)

Guess i am now onto leads & plugs - any recommendations for good leads and prices?

I should say i have resolved the idle - its pretty steady UNTILL the fans come on and it jumps about a good 200 - 300 revs  ::) the mv6 doesnt do that....

Any thoughts ? again it seems to be a lower rev range issue and idel is fine.

I don't think there are any good prices are there :-/

Just replaced leads on my 2.5 Elite, to my amazement £40 from the local motor factors, the engine had been running with a slight miss, it will now stay at tickover (600rpm) rock solid, and will accelerate up to 6500rpm, no misfire, the iridium plugs may also have helped, worth every penny.
best regards

had a missfire on my car after checking everything it turned out to be the leads. The car was good when it was not at running temp first thing in the morning but the missfire was intermittent & got worse when at normal temp. The cracks in the leads were difficult to spot as you could only see them when you bent them (not too much) . Most of the damage was at the diss pack end & outer surface was cracking. As for price stealers wanted £218 for all 6 leads but www.vauxcentre.co.uk did them for £70,HTH

You should see multirams move by blipping throttle. Double check the 1 way valve on front vac tank...

its like a little on off movement isnt it? i can "manually" get them to move! but they just dont seem to move when revving.

Ive been playing about with this and the car idles fine now. Rock steady 550rpm.

When i rev the car its lumpy from 500 revs to 2500 revs, but when its revved further up the counter it really seems fine.

So conclusions - revs very lumpy and missing under about 2500rpm - fine above, car performs fine when revving high, and multi rams no sign of movement.

Ive got a spare...wondering about trying them....

Clearly its NOT dis or lead related is it when part of the rev range is fine....?

I have a suspicion my HT leads aren't quite right.

I have checked / replaced everything else (including fuel filter, air filter, DIS pack, breathers, spark plugs, vacuum, etc.).

Can't put my finger on it but fuel consumption and performance seems a tiny bit variable. When hot the idle is a bit lumpy. At speed it's fine; under load it's fine. Emissions weren't great at the MoT either.

HT lead resistance is OK and the leads look OK. Number 3 plug may have been a tiny bit sootier than the others.

I think I'm going to go for the Bosch leads intended for the Vectra.
