Title: Engine Cutting out.
Post by: Faz on 15 June 2007, 15:45:45
Hello every one
I have just bought my 2.OL estate from manchester and drove it down south 220 miles and it was happily crusing down the motor way but when I stopped at the services the engine cut out when it was some where about 1000rpm a couple of times and I thought nothing of it.I have been driving it for a few of days now mostly around town and some days its ok.and some days it cuts out at every junction, roundabout or basicly whenever I slow down. The only way to stop it stalling is to have one foot on the breaks while fideling with gas pedal using the other foot which is dangerous, annoying and not a cost effective way of driving.Could any body guide me in the right direction please bearing in mind I am not an expert.Does any one know how to get hold of owners or workshop manuals?
Thankyou very much for your kind help.

Well the first thing I would recommend is a thorough clean of the breather system as that will cause all sorts of problems with idling.

Read this : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1162397695
Done for the 2.2 but it is basically exactly the same for the 2.0

Very easy job, but I would recommend at least 2 cans of carb cleaner (ideally 3) as you will use a lot on a gunked up car!

Owners manual? Got to be Haynes. Not always entirely accurate...  ::) but basically sound.

Workshop manuals can be found on CD on ebay, but I can comment no further as the legality of these is "questionable"

To be honest though, we have answers to most questions here.
You will see there are numerous guides to many jobs already in the maintenance section. :)

Clean the ICV, and then clean up breathers and throttle body :)

As I understand it the 2.0 is prone to clogging of the ICV (Idle Control Valve) and there's a little tiny hole to the throttle body (I think) that needs to be clear.

Hello there
Thanks for the replies I have read what was posted and thanks to laidback66 I found the photoes very usefull.I didn't know what a breather was never mind what it looked like!Oh well I'll have a good look tomorrow when its light and measure the size of the task.
I forgot to  mention the whisteling sound when engine is running the higher the revs the louder the sound. Is that also caused by dirty breathers?

Shall we say I wasn't told the were done so its probably safe to assume they weren't done in the last 2 years which was how long the previous owner had it.There is 107000miles on the clock.

OK.any idea how many hours labour involved and a rough cost of the parts so I won't get ripped off?
Also am I better off going to the dealers?OR Do you know an Omega specialist somewheredown here?

As others have said, contact JamesV6CDX. You may have to go to him (Cheltenham) as he is gearboxless in his Elite.  I know some people are concerned about his young years, but he can do a 2.0l cambelt/pump with his eyes shut.  Not quite sure what he charges, about £50 region, plus parts - much cheaper than any garage.

Old Git  ;D ;D  Good luck with your gearbox - been reading the thread and hoping my AR25 holds up.  Less torque under my foot (2.5) so I hope so...
