Yep - you certainly dont want to mix the two.  Also, best way of topping up is to empty the system and then put the correct amount of R134 in - its the proper way of doing a recharge.  Couple of threads on here detail peoples experience of doing this...  Shame you are not nearer Plymouth otherwise I could help you out with this.

thanks all the same Plymouth is a little 2 far ha ha, will the gauges that i use for the r12 work with r134 or will i need some adaptors.
I  use to recharge the a/c  on the cadillac and  other gm yanks that i had .Its the first british car ive had for many years no regrets apart for the big loss in value  where the yanks i never lost a penny on them.

You will need the adaptors to screw onto the R12 threaded fitting to install the bayonet R134 type ones on.  Had an old brit car that I did this on, they are easily available, maybe even on ebay.

R12 is outlawed in this country, to my knowledge anyway...  CFC ruling....  Iscon 49 is it's replacement and doesn't affect the oil that was used by the R12 in the system.....   We can only use the 134 in the VX's as far as I know....

As previously said "They don't mix"

I picked up a bulk R134a cylinder for about 80 quid - from Euro Car Parts I think it was.  About 13kg of the stuff.  They also did the oils etc.  May be cheaper places around but that worked for me,

Because I dabble in a/c.
Ronnie, its not my car so why would I get upset if someone wants to completely wreck the a/c on their own car? And ive owned a 3.0 Elite so I cant be an environment activist can I?

You could make a fortune out of  your supply of R12,a few years ago i tried to get the system re gassed on my mk2 granny,no body had any R12 or were too scared to use it in case the enviorment police turned up When i did get someone who would do it they wanted £300 . :(
