Title: Stinks of Petrol!
Post by: wastedperfection on 20 June 2007, 14:02:16
Hi,

Got a 2.5v6 saloon and car stinks of petrol whilst driving. I have parked up with engine on for 10 mins and reversed back to see if there is a leak and no puddle , nothing. Also opened up the bonnet whilst running and revved it and no leaks around the injectors??

Any Ideas?

No,

It does smell whilst stationary but is worse when driving. Do you have any idea what it can be?

not tried to fill a petrol lighter with lighter fuel in your car and spilled some on the seat?

nooooo no i dont smoke, but if i did, i'd be foolish enough to spill petrol all over the interior

spilled coffee on my passenger seat in my last car!

another suggestion, although you find no leaks, is it using all its petrol as opposed to losing it from a leak you just cant see?

might be better getting underneath and inspecting round the fuel tank

Given that's its fuel there's a high likelyhood it would evaporate before hitting the ground, especially if its dripiing on something hot :o.

Has fuel consumption changed significantly since you noticed it?

I do think you need to get underneath and inspect the fuel lines and junctions.   Have you done any work which might have disturbed them (fuel filter, connections to injector rail eg for replacing cam covers etc.?)

..  I assume you don't have a spare can rattling around the boot .. sorry !

Is it defo that it's pure petrol, what I mean is, NOT burnt petrol from the exhaust gasses, i.e.  poor boot seal or ex manifold leak under bonnet...   The only other thing is, spilt petrol will evaporate really quickly on a hot engine and especially this weather...  try running the car for a few minutes from cold, turn it off and see if any leaks / smells then..

My car does tick first thing in the morning and thought it might be manifold gasket(s). Perhaps that is what is causing the smell? , but when i really smelt it earlier the engine was warm and the ticking had gone , so surely the fumes wouldnt leak then?

Think you need to check from cold run for a minute, look for petrol before it evaporates..
