Title: Please help!
Post by: mbraz on 18 June 2007, 10:40:42
Hi,

I have a strange problem which I've already wrote about but still no solution for it (the car is a 2.2i facelift Omega). The problem is the following. In case of constant speed and sometimes during acceleration the car is loosing power for 1-3 sec. If I keep pushing the throttle power comes back and the car starts to accelerate again. The only other sympthome is that the car has an oil consumption of 1l for 1000 miles (no error code unfortunately). The car has regular oil and filter changes (including fuel filter).
It seems to me that this error occures more frequently when the engine is hot or the outside temperature is higher. I usually have less frequently this problem during the winter.

Now what I have already done:
- new ignition module
- new mass airflow meter
- new throttle body (I got a no signal error code for that)
- cleaned the airflow pipes
- new gasket for the camcover
- cleaned the EGR - no sign for sticking
- new sparks

Non of these sorted the problem. Unless I change the EGR I have no other idea what to do. I do not really want to change it as it seems fine for me and no error code emerged. I took it to an official Opel dealer they did an engine test with Tech 2 but they saw no problem with the car.

I suspect that I have the problem in the full rev range, but between 2000 and 3000 it is the most frequent.

Please help me because I run out of any ideas.

Thanks

Some time ago, I had a problem with poor running and it turned out to be a faulty coolant temperature sensor. The Agent couldn't find it with their Tech 2, and it was only down to my own detective work to identify the problem.

Maybe it's an area worth exploring.

Good luck!

Coolant sensor is a cheap trial ;) Also check and make sure that you have no airleaks anywhere..If you don't know with engine running spray carb cleaner over all the areas, if the engine revs change repeat in that area until you pin point the leak. If i have just told you how to suck eggs then i appologise in advance..

Did you say 1 litre per 1000 miles - thats quite a high oil consumption... is it burning oil or leaking it? Have you done a compression check to see whats going on there?  (Although poor compressions etc wouldnt normally give rise to intermittent problems...)

thanks for the tips,

I am going to do a compression check, it is burning the oil, unfortunately there is no oil leak. Overall I asses the car to be quite strong, and I do not belive that there is a significant issue with the compression. In addition, I belive that low compression would not result in periodic power loss, it would cause continuous poor performance?  :(

If your milage is very high the oil consumption may not be that high.  But if your meega has done less than 120K I would suspect problems in this area.

-Do you get the EM light at all? Run the paperclip test anyways..
-If your compression test comes up ok take out your spark plugs and look for signs of oil burning could be leaking through the valve stems.
-Have you cleaned the breathers?

Not too disimilar to a problem I had with the 2.0 on a veccy - turned out to be one valve stem oil seal with a big hole in it  :o

Clearly you also suffer from poor use of Tech 2 in Hungary to....

What they should have done is check out the actuators etc whilst there, in this way the EGR could have been tested...and hopefuly eliminated

In addition, I would be running a vaccum test to....

I assume all the usual stuff like air filter and fuel filter are all ok?

Incidentally, is it manual or auto?

i was going to say valve stems but also could be one of the rings is on the way out if it high millege good luck as for performance could have oil on one of the plugs giving poor spark good luck

Thanks for the answers. The mileage is approximately 90 thousand miles (135 000 km). Finally I came up with the same idea, that oil gets into the cylinder. I will let you know the result of the compression check.

IIRC Marks DTM thinks that 4 cylinder engines suffer from wear on No.1 cylinder.

The earlier 2.0 ones certainly do...I haven't seen any later ones with the heads off to get a feel for if any changes were made to this area.....and the 2.0 did have changes around 97/98 including the addition of balance shafts.

At the end of the day, any engine is as good as its servicing.....

i have a 2.0 8 valve an mine has a problem at the mo where it starts normal when cold but when it heats up it ticksover erratically i.e. it hunts between 2000-3000 revs ive changed plugs an leads an even the fuel filter also my mate whos got a astra mk4 decided to disconnect the afm an the car ran perfectly on a test run of 5-10 miles but as soon as we got back an reconnected the afm it conked out and would not start????  as if it had flooded leave it for 10 -15 mins an itstarts but runs rough an kicks out a lot of black smoke?? an then clears an runs okish for a bit..this fault has only come in the last few days after a family holiday down to poole an nearly runnin outa fuel on the m5 due to rain causing traffic jams an me refusing to pay motorway prices for fuel..could i have crap in the fuel lines???

most problems are caused by the idle control valve and the breathers being dirt ,might need a good cleaning :y :y :y

Air leak is likely....

sorted it at last ;D i found a breakers in wolverhampton who did me a favour an looked at it turned out to be an intermittent fault with the fuel pump relay!! we`ve changed it an it`s running great an now i`m happy  ;D i even found time today to put the leather interior door cards in her...  8-)
