hi everybody, can any one help me with my 1998 2.5 V6 cdx,the car had been idle for a few weeks,i took the car for a long run & pop,the flexible pipe running around the left hand side of the engine on the recirculation pipe had melted & made the car sound like the exhaust manifold had come loose,i replaced this piece of pipe, same thing happened, bought new egr valve, same thing happened again, checked all over the engine & looks like oil is being pushed out through rocker gaskets, feels like pressure is building up in the engine when driving until the pipe gives out, shortly before this happens it feels like the engine power is pulsing when i'm cruising.i've checked the egr valve with a multi meter & it does seem to open when revved, anybody got any ideas on what i try next.

Sounds like a blocked cat/exhaust to me. Has it been missing due to oil in the plug wells?
On a separate note you need the breathers cleaning and the cam cover gaskets replacing (see the how to section).

Definitely a failed cat or blocked centre section on that side.
You could try dropping the exhaust and blowing through the two sides, should be able to tell whether it is exhaust or cat by comparing with the good side.

:) Thankyou very much for the prompt reply,it's great to have a fresh mind on this,i didn't know which direction to move in next,if it stops raining for long enough i'll have a look at the exhaust, thanks again for your help.

as others have said, blocked exhaust, causing all exhaust gas from that side to go back to egr. If its been missing (likely if rocker gaskets shot), this can quickly ruin a cat...
-
BTW, the pipes etc you are referring to are part of the secondary air injection system, not the EGR.
EGR is the corrugated pipe and valve between drivers side exhaust manifold and the intake plennum

Exhaust manifold gaskets can go too, believe me I speak from experience.

Hi,thanks for the information, the exhaust manifold gaskets are ok,but would a blocked or collapsed cat cause these pipes on the secondary fuel system to pop/melt.I have found that if i remove the pipe that runs from the rail that the two flexible pipes are on to an aluminium baffle type cylinder behind radiator then the car runs better but noisier & won't rev cleanly over 3000 rpm.the general opinion on the cat problem seems to be logical but i don't understand much about the secondary injection system, cheers, dave.

Secondary air system injects air into the exhaust manifolds during warm up to help get the cats up to running temp quicker. There is a big fan under the ns wing which is ducted through those silver pipes and the rubber couplings into each exhaust manifold. When the cats block, the rubber couplings are the weak link which blows and relieves some of the back pressure and allows the engine to "breathe" better.

Yes - in effect, all the exhaust from that bank is going that way, rather than done the exhaust...
