I changed my front wheel bearing yesterday and thought that I was in for a bit of piece and quiet but no :(
The wearing noise from the front has gone - happy days!! but this has also been masking a further noise coming from the rear end.
Have noticed a bit of a scratchy type noise coming from under the middle of the car every time I blip the accelerator of late and a reduction in this noise every time I push the clutch in. So today have had the car up on my new stands (ace they are - ta for the recommendation :y) and with all the following disconnected/slackened off to reduce the friction noises to try and isolate :- handbrake, rear pads and rear discs - but the grinding noise (2 actually) appears to be coming from around the diff area and not the rear bearings. One noise is from the output shafts of the diff and the other higher pitch scratching/grinding noise is coming from the input shaft. Diffs are beyond my capabilities (I think) so since I don't have a bottomless pit of money am putting it into Vauxhall for an investigation first, on Monday morning - can anyone maybe shed any light before I potentially lose a fortune at the stealers?
cheers

It does have oil in it, doesn't it?????? :-/

I thought they where sealed and required no topping up - I have no oil leaks - never have - and the car sits on the drive a lot in the same spot without any residue - will check it though - any easy way other than dropping the front of the case off??

try undoing the level plug on the side(8mm allen key)

Checked that - although was a little too close to the level plug when I openned it - started dripping on my face - so plenty of oil in there then ;D It's very smooth too - not gritty.
This is a pic taken from MDTM diff oil change guide - whats the likelyhood of these bearings going duff? Cause that's what the noise seems to sound like :-/ Am assuming mine is a non LSD unlike the pic but not sure.

*BUMP*!!!!!! Just to keep it on the first page - am assuming everyones been out on the sauce tonight - quite rightly so too :y
Anymore takers for my diff issue??? :(

Debris trapped between abs sensor and toothed wheels?

probably better finding a diff off breaker, and swapping over...

How straight forward a job is this?

if the noise changes when you dip the clutch i wouldn't have said its the diff. as the diff will always spin while the car is moving,as will the prop, etc. so try the thrust bearing in the box first? check the gearbox mounting as the prop goes through it and can rub on the rubber part of the mounting(sit directly under the gear sick) a good diff isn't easy to get hold of, a LSD is rocking horse s*** :0
Good luck

Have been right underneath the diff and the grinding noise is definately around that area, though can't be too sure that the noise isn't transmitting through the shaft. Am going to let the experts decide what's wrong with it but not looking forward to the prognosis I can tell you that much - even less the quote to repair :(

how are you checking for this noise? ie are you jacking the car up on the diff and spinning the wheels?

I'm jacking the car up one side at a time - am reluctant to support the car on the diff - doesn't look right!!! and spinning the freedup side by hand - it's then you can hear at the diff itself a low pitch grinding noise. The other scratchy type noise I get when I'm changing gear on the go. I'm now convinced there is definately two issues on the go here. Am also not going to risk the car on the drive to Spain in 3 weeks time - I can see a financial repair bill disaster looming if I subjected the car to that type of journey at the mo - So hiring an MPV instead :( Hopefully this will be a straight forward repair by Vauxhall but are they ever?? Getting depressed now.

How quiet should a diff be when you move it free hand???
-
the noise your getting from the diff sounds normal the way you are checking it. what you are doing is spinning the internal gears which allow the car to go round corners. but you do have a thrust washer/spigot bearing issue with the cog-box
-
when a diff or diff bearing lets go you will know it as you will need the ice on max to drown out the sound!!!
;D ;D

I agree. They aren't silent, especially with no load on them as there is backlash in the gears. Also, if the car's jacked up the driveshafts will be at a fair angle and the UJs might be making some noise.

Diffs should be quiet on these and very rarely give trouble so a second hand item is a good bet (get the right ratio though!) and easy enough to change.
I suspect its the pinion bearing gone due to a past pinion seal being replaced in-correctly and the nut was overtightened, does the noise vary with load/throttle position?

The diff noise varies with speed and not throttle position and does not chnage whether under load or turning by hand. It's definately not quiet when turned - but not so that I need the ICE on loud to mask it. I've probably muddied the waters to be honest due to me having two noise issues - one appearing to be diff related but another being transmission related which stops on pushing in the clutch. The diff noise gets louder going down hill if you can believe that and quietens down going up. This ones beaten me (which is unusual) and am hopeful Vauxhalls can give me a not too harsh quote to repair tomorrow - or at least give the exact issue(s) I have with noises coming from bearings at the mo so I can plan it long term if going to be on the expensive side.

I wouldn't let Vauxhall change anything. Diff or Gearbox would be very much cheaper sourced second hand!

Just picked myself up off the stealers floor after they had a look at my diff problem - replacement - £1800 :o :o :o
Have had a quote off a transmission place who can replace the bearings for £450 - does that sound reasonable or would you go for a scrappy?

Where can I find the ratio information from?

where is marks dtm when you need im!!

2.6 Cdx Manual is a 3.9:1 ratio....the same as fitted to 3.2 autos, 2.5 manuals (98 onwards), 3.0 autos (98 onwards), 2.0's (all models)

I'd have a look for a 2nd hand diff. You won't have the car off the road waiting for it to be re-conned and diff problems are rare enough that you'd be unlucky to get a bad one, I reckon. Sounds like the ratio is common enough. Would be worth having the back plate off the replacement to check everything looks in decent condition first and to drain the old oil and refill with fresh.
