Title: Oil in spark plugs
Post by: wotavidun on 10 July 2007, 15:18:21
Hi everyone.

I have a 2.5 V6 estate it's done 75k. I thought it was running a bit sluggish and after reading this site I checked one of the spark plug wells and it is swimming in oil!

Does this mean I will have to change the cam covers or could it be something else?

I have just had an oil change would this have made the problem worse?

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, couple more questions,

1. If oil is only in one bank(drivers side) do I still need to replace the gasket on the other side?

2. It's been mentioned by a mechanic that I might have to replace the rocker covers themselves, is that right?

3. On Marks how to, he says depressurise the fuel system but doesn't mention re pressurising it??

Sorry if all this sounds a bit thick!!

Don't forget to clean breathers, or the gaskets will fail again!

Half way through the job now will let you know how I get on!!

On checking the service history looks like the oil has'nt been changed for over 20k miles!!!!

If oil is black and horrible, do some quick 250m changes, gradually increasing the interval.

If the passenger side is not leaking (they can leak on the outside - resulting often in a honk when it runs onto the exhaust - as well as inwards into the plug wells), then  I wouldn't bother as that one is much trickier than the drivers side.

But before you put everything back together make sure you clean the breather system per the guide on here - that is why the seals failed in the first place.

Its also worth taking the opportunity to change plugs at the same time, unless they have been done recently.
