I've just returned from a 600 mile mainly motorway journey towing a 12 foot (well loaded) van at a constant 55 - 60mph. I was disappointed to get 22mpg overall. Anyone else had experience of a 2.5 V6 towing like this? Is 22mpg to be expected?

Have to wait for one of the caravanners to comment, but I would suggest 22mpg isn't unreasonable, esp if you have an auto.

Very good - I have managed high of that# and low of 11*
# Somerset Levels
*Running gas, head wind and thrashing over the hills in Cornwall, oh and keeping up with traffic flow

My 3.2 did 25 mpg towing a glider trailer @ 60 on a 100 mile motorway run. A caravan is much less aerodynamic and probably heavier so it doesn't sound unreasonable.

Not towed a van with my meega yet but i would have settled for 22mpg when i had the range rover. 18ft van and a fortnights luggage @ 9mpg :'( 22mpg solo would have been nice too ::)

22mpg sounds about right to me. Towed the van to Perranporth on the weekend and got low 20's mpg, although still got there and back on less than two gallons. :y
Normally get about 28mpg on normal day to day driving and 35mpg if taking it really easy on the motorway.

11 is my worst, but the aerodynamic drag and weight hurts consumption, head winds as well.
On the flat on gas 20mpg is possible - hopefully a bit more with the new plugs and I hope I don't need a coil pack

Does this make you feel any better?

:-? This is what I got going to Cornwall the week before last.

My 2.2 will give average 23 mpg towing 15 ft caravan -
give or take 2/3 mpg.

Thanks all for these replies. I feel great now, in a masochistic kinda way! Forgot to mention mines a manual version. But sounds about right.
Cheers all

I have not towed with my Omega, I used to tow with our 2.0 Cavaliers, but I think that 55 mph is to slow to tow at... the reason being whenever you come to some slight incline your car slows down you end up changing down....which must have an effect on mpg... if you travel at 65-70 don't have the same trouble at slight hills plus you get there quicker ;) :y
