Is this a sign of cat failure, been doing it a while and had no probs with MOT's....or is it normal ?...Thanks...Wayne
-
Does it smell all the time??? Or just when you boot it???
My last car before this one, when booting it down the motorway, smelt like someone was lighting matches in the back of the car, then when slowing down, it got really smelly, the kids used to hate it, I myself thought it was funny.
I was told by an exhaust co. that it was quite normal and the more they smell, the better they work.
Not much help but it's something... lol.
-
Only when booted....driven steadily its ok
-
Then I would say its OK !!!
I was told it was normal, its the chemical transformation, that makes the smell, at higher revs, has more work to do in a shorter time.
Its not nice is it???
:y

Good enough for me :y...your right about the smell though..and always a dead giveaway to the missus its been driven hard!(usually when i'm late picking her up!)

Try a low sulphur fuel!
The smell sounds like supermarket petrol
-
Thanks for the pointer, your right we do tend to use asda now and again....i'll try something different and see how it goes...Wayne
-
Try BP Shell or something similar, basically anything low sulphur.
HTH :y

i fill up at the bp garage cav or asda but for some reason my car performs and sounds alot better on the bp stuff than the asda stuff for some strange reason

As I have said before, Petrol is Petrol in the same way as Beer is Beer......you get my drift?
All the brands are all called the same and made the same but have slightly different recipes...
-
There are differences between fuels, a good example was my 2.0CD towing.
I filled up in Tescos, it would hunt between 3rd and 4th all the time, on the return trip I would fill up with Shell and it would stay in top and return better mpg.

.. Except it's a lot more difficult to recycle petrol and turn it into Lager. ;D
with Beer all you need is a pair of kidneys ;D

I have heard all the supermarkets use ultra low RON russian fuel, RON bumped up with additives. Didn't realise Sainsburys was different.

He He.
I was telling SWMBO about the air quality sensor that puts the climate system into recirculation when the air quality outside degrades. She paused for a second and then asked why they didn't put one under the driver's seat as well, while they were at it. :-[

I had a real 'eggy' smell in an escort I had. Turned out the alternator was putting out too high a voltage and was gently poaching my battery ::)

When I get my car working hard, and it has to be really hard, I get a strong smell of sulphur..... but I bet it smells worse to the person following behind ;D
