Title: Inlet Manifold air leak.......well I think !!
Post by: nen3906 on 22 July 2007, 18:02:20
I need help !!!!!!
Joking apart, on my 2.5 v6, I can hear an air leak coming from the top/back of the engine.....well under the scuttle.....or so I thought..... By chance today, I placed a cloth over the 'black' centre part of the manifold (the thing above the oil cooler) and the noise stopped....
My question is, is this meant to leak ? If not, can you buy anything to repair it, or is it a new manifold needed    :-[.....

Thanks in advance
Steve

Are you an Auto or Man - need to update your sig ;)

Just re-read your post.... are you talking about the ECOtec bit - breather box? Are the hoses secure at the back.  Am positive you shouldn't be getting an air leak there.

If you are on about the black ECOTec plastic breather that sits on plenum, there is a seal under it. Also, under plenum, 6 o rings as well...

Its the black plastic bit on the top of the engine.....(sorry, little thick !!!)  I can here the air leak kind of noise, but if I place a towel over the right hand edge of it, it stops.......

Have a look in the excellent maint guide  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152598350
Explains about the seals and how they are put together in that :y

Ive just had a quick look and it appears to be ok....
I had the oil cooler replaced a couple of weeks ago....and when it came back, there was a difference........There are few pipes that fit onto the black eco things.....2 x big, 2 x smaller........when it came back there was a fifth one appeared.......but not fixed onto anything.  It is held in place by a cable tie onto the 4 plastic pipes that come from the rear......I spoke to the garage but they say it was not attached to anything when they worked on it, but I have no way of proving if they are telling the truth or not....
Is this 5th hose meant to be attached at the rear of the engine ???

Assuming you have an auto, it's the breather pipe for it, and so it shouldn't be connected to anything. Also assuming that they've connected the rest of the pipes back  up to where they removed them -- it's not unheard of for garages to get them wrong.

Yes, it is an auto, and the pipe comes from down below, so may make some sense....
Does anyone else's 2.5 make a hissing sound from the top ?   Or do I def have a leak ?

5th pipe is auto breather as said.  As said, check gasket underneath the black plastic bit.

My Ecotec black bit hisses like it has a leak too. Worse when I place my hand near it on the passenger side.

I've sprayed lots of carb cleaner around - no change.
I've changed the plenum O-rings.
I've changed the seals for the Ecotec cover.

I think I can just hear the air flowing through it.......

O right, well I wonder if what I am hearing it meant to be like it......
Think I may go to vauxhall and see if they will have a little listen to see if its normal.....or see if there are any cars for sale locally and have a listen to them.... ;)

My 3.0 auto does same at tick over. Just put down to air flow due to butterfies being closed.
Goes once revs rise. Breather bridge is unlikely to have been removed whilst Oil cooler was changed unless they cleaned them out as well which would surprise me as garages tend to avoid doing jobs that are'nt being paid for.
