Just got to Dundee after driving all night, anyway this is just one of a couple of problems I have now, have a screeching/rubbing noise coming from the pulleys, looks sounds like its coming from the flywheel? or could be something else close to it alternator? Any ideas folks as I may just have to chop it in to Vx up here today. :(
Also all the way up the computer kept telling me to check oil level, I had only just topped it up before leaving, the check light would stay on and then go off, this was happenning all the way up, have to wait for the engine to cool before I can check the level. :(

My sentiments exactly :(, but other than those bits and the engine management light still being on the car is running fine :y.....just don't know whether I can run it back to London without any serious damge being caused :-/

Hi Mke,
What voltage is the battery at. Mine kept saying that had problems with oil level when blasting along from Perth, not Australia ;D, and oil level was o.k. Found that alternator was on its way out. Alternator now changed and no issues with the engine, at the moment. :y
Dave,
P.M. sent.

Don't know the battery voltage, but easy to check, thought it may be the alternator?

Aux tensioner? Thats just above alternator.
-
I`d be very wary Mike...screetching inthat area can be bad
nasty questions first- cambelt and tensioners when were they last done? .....it may be hard to tell if the screetching is from aux belt or the timing belt due to close proximity...so lets just rule out that one first ?
If your not sure you could pop the aux belt off and run for only a few seconds....does it go away..?
-
I'd be inclined to pull the aux. belt off (easy to do, just hold the idler pulley back against the tensioner and slip it off), run it for a few seconds and see if the noise is still there. If it is, don't drive it as it could be a cam belt tensioner on its' way out.
If the noise is aux. belt related have a look at the condition of the belt, make sure it's not cracked or glazed in appearance and feel for play or rumble in each of the accessory pullies. Make sure it's not rubbing on anything. It's not one of the notorious autovaux "not quite long enough" aux belts, is it?
Does turning air con on/off, turning steering lock to lock influence the screeching sound?
As to the oil warning you need to check the oil level manually. My guess is that the oil level warning switch is duff.

Great minds think alike, eh, Markie? :y
Some type faster than others though >:(

<Looks at cup #1 of the day, still 3/4 full on desk> Ahh, that'll be it.

Just got back in house after meeting up with Mike in local town. Noise coming from around alternator/aux pulley area. Took Mike and car down to local VX (know the service Manager) and had the top aux pulley bearing diagnosed as the fault. WD sprayed on bearing and noise got less. They could not get the part until Tues and as Mike wants to get back down South tomorrow so he is taking 'as is'.
The alternator is giving out 14.08v so that is not too bad. The oil light looks as to be a sensor or connection.
I will let Mike post later when he can.

Imagine vx not having a part in stock ::)

..I know but to be fair they did not want paying for the 15 mins that it took to diagnose the problem. Also they are one of these Masterfit outfits which tend not to hold many spares around. :o

Changed one on Monday, 99 - 2.5 Omega.
Bearing siezed up then then it collaped cos it melted the outer.
Stopped rotating start to melt the belt
Would'nt want the belt wipping around under the bonnet if it snapped at speed
New tensioner £45.00 plus ribbed belt 29.00 [TC £17.00] + VAT.
Don't think you can get the pully only. If you can it was not in stock.

You can, and it was not in stock. :o

Mike has the part numbers kindly supplied by local VX Masterfit. :y

heres hoping he gets back to Costa Del Peckham without mishap... :-/
-
I am sure he will, he can always play the AA card and get relayed back. Or the greater card, OOF, and ask for help if needed as he goes down the road. I am sure that there are members that would be willing to help if needed. ;)

I just phoned mikedundee as I have an aux tensioner pulley going spare. Mine is 2.5 1995 his is 2.6 not sure of year.
I take it the pulley will fit?

I believe all V6 ones are the same...

That's good. However, just gone to check the garage and I now recall throwing it out :-[

IIRC, I only paid £20 for a complete kit (tensioner + belt) from Camberley Autofactors

I just put a new SKF 6203 bearing in mine, drill out the rivets tap screwdriver into pulley groove working all roud to prevent distorting pulley, open holes to 6mm fit screws (you must file the heads down to the same thickness as the rivet heads to give clearance) refit with nuts facing front of car, we use these bearings at work so cost was zero, but they are very cheap from a bearing stockist. Takes about 30 mins. :) :)

Pulley available on its one for v6, about £15 iirc

Well folks, as Dave said and as TB etc., diagnosed it appears it is the tensioner/pulley above the Alternator, since visiting Masterfit in Cupar with Dave and the bloke spraying some gunk etc onto it, it has quietened it down a bit now, not half as bad as what it was. So Big Thanks to Dave :y for helping me out on Friday, and not a bad mate to have in Cupar at Masterfit, well handy :y
As for the checl oil level problem, well checked the oil this morning and well nothing showing on the dipstick :-/...ended up putting in a litre and a half of oil before it got up to the top notch, so yet another problem >:(...it seems to be drinking a lot of oil at the moment so the oil check light was probably correct :-[

I wonder if oil use is related to lamda issues

I wonder if oil use is related to lamda issues
:(
They can get contaminated with oil consumption. It would normally need to be pretty heavy though. Dundee and back on 1 1/2 litres probably isn't significantly more than manufacturer's spec, and I'd expect motorway cruising to keep everything hot enough for them to stay clear.
No sign of leaks, I guess?
The data sheet for a Lambda sensor I used in the kit car states oil consumption at 0.7l/1000 km for a lifetime of 100,000 miles.

Unless it dumps it all at once, eg at startup, cause the sensors to get coated?

Good point. If it's leaking down through the stem seals that may well be the case.
Does it smoke at startup, Mike?

Mick and I discussed the 'Check Oil Level' warning over a cuppa before he set south. Mine does the same thing, but only when going extended motorway runs at a steadyish kinda speed and this tied with what he described. My oil level normally is at mid stick when the warning comes up but less so when fully upto the mark.
I hoped that he would have checked partway down the road, just to be on the safe side..... :(

The bearing for the V6 tensioner pulley is moulded into the pulley and cannot be changed. Good news is that you can get a new pulley from Vx.
On the 2.0 / 2.2 I think Vx only list the complete tensioner assembly, the pulley is not available separately so you seem to have found a way around this. I think the 4 cyl tensioner usually fails at the pivot, the arm is not held parallel to the belt anymore and the pulley begins to rub on the belt edge.

Yes it does, but not all the time :-/
