A little arm with a ball & socket at end fastened to the rear near side radius arm.

Ball and socket may have been seized, and when they jacked up the car on the body, so that the suspension was at full travel you may find it has either snapped or come apart :(

just to the right of the diff.

The old analogue ones are prone to water getting into the pot, try disconnecting the rod and moving the pot over its full range, suspension should follow. Be careful with the plastic ball joints, they are brittle.
You can also release the pressure by removing the pipe from one shock absorber, this should lower the rear end and give you time to find out whats wrong.
At least you know that the compressor works ;)

ive checked the arm and its still there and all is still intact, im going to pull one of the pipes off a shock and see if that will do it

You're right. I was thinking HID level control because I've just been sent a pair of switches.
