Title: Noise from Aux belt area
Post by: Vauxhall Omega on 18 August 2007, 12:09:54
Hi, I have a wizzing noise coming from the Aux belt area, somebody said it could be the tensioner pully. I have just taken that off and it dosent seem to be that. I was thinking it could be the alternator but it dosent appear to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :'(

When did you last have your cam belt changed? Could be a roller.

Had a listen again and it seems to be the alternator, but when I had the Aux belt off I span the alternator and It seemed fine. :-?

I've had to change an alternator before due to bearing failure, I think the tensioner puts too much strain unnecessary on the bearings.

When spun up by hand the bearing noise was quite noticeable.

 Hi,
Have you tried running the engine for a bit with the auxs. belt off and seeing if the noise is still apparent.

Had a similar problem last week upon arrival in Dundee, was diagnosed following a visit to DaveL Vx mate in Cupar as being the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner, just bought a new one £53 from Vx. Yet to be replaced. Very noisy it did sound like one of the pulleys and could have also been the alternator, the guy from Vx sprayed some Grease spray onto the tensioner, and that quietened it down quite a bit from what it was, still not as bad e.g., noise at the moment, just need to get it changed over now.

Could be the same problem ::)

I think I will try running it with the aux belt off as Pete Elite said. Would it be ok to just take it off crank shaft wheel?

Grab a 15mm, knock the belt off and remove from the car - do it while the car is coolish as the water pump wont spin cos you have the belt in your hand.

Best to remove the belt fully, just incase!

I did What irmscherkris said and took it off, the noise stoped. It was what mikedundee said it was, the tensioner. Thanks very much for all your help :y

Remember, you can get the pulley on its own for about 20 quid.....you dont need the whole assembly.

My Dad has the same engine as me, so I went round to him and he let me try his tensioner on my car and it still made the noise. I am going to try his alternator tomorow and see if its that :'(
