Title: Very very sudden loss of coolant

Just been brought home by the AA after my omega suddenly decided to take a really big pi$$ and dump all it's coolant all over the road.  I noticed the smell first then saw the needle sailing past 100 degrees but manged to pull over ok.

Anyway the coolant is totally empty, all the hoses in and out of the radiator are dry and the tank is empty, when I had the bonnet up i could see coolant running off the front of the oil sump and it seemd to be coming down the sides aswell although I couldn't see where it was originating from.

The hoses that I can see seem to be intact but I can't get to the ones at the back of the engine until tomorrow.  

Anyone else had a simialr thing happen and if so what did it turn out to be?

Exactly the same last Friday.
Turned out to be the NEW heater Bypass Valve I had just fitted from Vauxhall World.  >:(

Hi the same thing happen to me last year on a 3.0 it was he HBV and had to be replace after that all was fine.

Tell me about it  ::) Mine failed within three weeks & was bought from Vauxhall, didn't look like a genuine part though  :-/

Forgot about the HBV, would make sense as there is a nice big red stain around that area :)  How much are they roughly and where's the best place to get them?

Can't remember but they're less than £40. Get a genuine one from Vauxhall & make sure it has the GM markings on it.

Just bought one from autovaux, i'm assured it's a genuine part but we'll see tomorrow when it comes.  £30ish including delivery.

av definition of genuine can be a bit flexible.

If real GM it should come in a white box with GM hologram on the label, not a placky bag.  

GM one on trade is £30 incl vat. (its not on TC )

Surely coolant on front of sump is unlikely to be HBV?

I would have thought the coolant transfer pipe (front) has blown out?

There is a big red stain around where the HBV is located and the car was pointing down hill when it happened so the coolant could have found it's way to the front of the sump fairly easily i Suppose.

We'll see tomorrow when I can have a proper look.

The water vents out of two holes, one straight at the bulk head.....the other straight down the valley!

So yes, its not unusual to see water around the front of the sump.

The oil cooler cover let go on my Omega...very similar symtoms to HBV
