Hi guys,
My car has a front wheel wobble at around 45/55mph.
So far, I have done the following:
1. Had the balancing checked and re-checked
2. Replaced both front wishbones
3. Replaced both front drop-links
4. Replaced both front track rod assembies
5. Replaced both front tyres
6. Replaced front discs/pads
7. Balancing done yet again........
After all this, the problem is still there.....! :(
Does anyone have any more ideas to try.... :-/
Thanks,
Stu

quick easy one is to swap your fronts to the back and vise versa to see if there is any change

..any play at the wheels... e.g. front wheel bearings...?

Hi,
Have you checked the steering column itself!
-
Thanks guys
I will double check the wheel bearings.
What exactly on the steering column should I be checking for?

Hi mate,
Does the column itself wobble up and down or side to side? or is there play bettween moving the steering wheel and the wheels moving (best checked with engine running and power steering system on!) the play in the steering is easily adjusted via an adjustment bolt on top of the steering box, can make a huge difference! if wobble is present in the column it may indicate worn linkage.
sounds like a frustrating problem (and expensive!!) my sympathy :(

can you drive through the wobble mate ???
if say when past speed you mention it eases off then thats deffo a wheel /tyre related problem ???
just trying to help ya shorten list of possibilities.. :y

If bearings etc check out ok, then there is another possible cause and that's the nut under top nut of strut maybe working loose,; you'll need to pop off the plastic cover on the strut top mount, then remove the top nut (I think allen key and large spanner will be needed here) followed by the large domed washer and you should then see the lower nut (this holds spring/bearing and strut assy. together) now check tightness of this nut, if this nut is loose it can cause wheel wobble at around the speeds you mention.
Cheers Pete

Thank you for all your help guys....
It is working out quite expensive so far..... :'(
Bearings seem ok, no play in steering column itself....
The problem does only happen between 45/55 tho, so should be wheel/tyre related
Could the hub be out of shape, causing the wobble. Although it does now have new discs/pads (genuine GM), the wobble does increase when braking but only at the above mentioned speeds, suggesting that the wheels, though balanced, are transmitting the wobble thru steering....
Also, where exactly is the adjustment on the steering box? Good idea to adjust that anyway.... :y
I will also check on the top strut bolts.....
Any more suggestions will be greatly appreciated.....thank you

May sound stupid but did you or mechanics checked the shaft balance ?

Hi,
Have you checked the top mounts for wear :question :y.

Many thanks to all who posted on this topic......
At last, the problem is now solved....it was the front passenger side hub/wheel bearing assembly causing the problem
£45 later (e-bay) and all is well again at last...
Thanks again,
Stu :y

How did you end up finding out what it was in the end then ? random guesses

How did you end up finding out what it was in the end then ? random guesses
As most of the suspension set up had already been changed, and the problem definitely seemed to be related to wheels/tyres, i basically took a guess that it may be the hub being slightly out of shape.
The wobble did increase slightly under braking. As the Brake discs/pads were new and genuine, this meant that the problem was definitely coming from the wheel area, hence my thinking that it could be the hub.
Finally, as I knew that the drivers side hub/bearing had been changed, I opted for the passenger side, and at last, fortunately, I was proved right......
Thanks for everyones advice again......
