Title: Radio- poor /no reception on MW and LW
Post by: monza789 on 29 August 2007, 21:31:32
Hi everyone....

My 2.5 V6 estate's radio reception is dreadful / non existent on MW and LW...cannot get any stations on these two wavebands. FM is fine .

Any ideas why this is so?.....its got a standard single CD player and radio vauxhall fitment. (1997 vintage)

..could it be that the antenna was in the windscreen and its since been replaced?

My radio is non too brilliant on AM either for that matter.

I'm sure my 94 estate had an aerial in the windscreen - seems unlikely that the amp would then be at the rear of the car, although I never tried to find it.  On my 98 estate there is an aerial at the rear of the roof, and I think the amp is in the cavity on the left side of the boot.

Some have a Rear Screen Aerial. (My '99 has)

Check your heated rear screen for 2 vertical elements connecting all the
horizontal elements.
If so, then you have a Rear Screen aerial.

If so, check elements for damage and clean the inside of the rear screen,
and check the aerial amplifier connections as 'The Boy' said.

Forgot to add, as you have the estate version, and if you have a rear screen
aerial, then check the cabling that connects the tailgate to the car.

It will be subject to repetitive movement, on the open/close of the tailgate,
and there may be chafing or breakage.

Before you go ripping out the antenna cable check the antenna conection to the back of the radio, i had the same problem on my estate and had to replace the cable due to poor connection . there is a joint in the passenger footwell kick panal and if you can get the short section to the radio it will be an easy fix.Vx did do a one piece cable to get over probs with that joint. and have since replaced the whole thing. ;)

I have been have problems with my aerial, it seems the lead that goes to the back of the head unit goes very hard possibly due to the heat  :-/ I remade the connection using a new connector as I have fitted a non standard headunit, but I was still having reception problems I have since found that the center core of the cable was snapped and giving a poor signal. remade after the break and its ok at the moment  ;) I have been to halfords and I have brought an ariel extension leadŁ5.99 and if it starts to play up I will run this to the amp
