Post by: johnc46 on 04 September 2007, 19:33:28
Retried paper clip test I linked pins 6&4 as per photo at
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...6/plug1to8.jpg
ign on, inserted link. light goes out but does not flash, waited 3mins. Then inserted link, turned ign on ,to position before start light goes out but does not flash waited 3mins. Air bag light and ABS light go out at different times so are not connected in parallel EML goes out on start up. Any ideas please. :(

i think they wrong pins. but you should connect pins prior to turning ignition on! light will come on then go off then flash codes out.  BUT REMEMBER LING BEFORE TURN IGNITION ON!

Yes, that link works.

The pins look correct.
Judging by your details, you'll have a Simtec 56.5.
So there is no 'initiation of test' flashes, so your result of
no flashes would suggest that you have no faults stored.

What codes were you expecting to find?

I'm a little confused by this.  I found a link somewhere else  www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes  which worked for me and I have the same plug as yours.  According to the info I got, the pins are numbered with 1 being in the top right hand side and 2 being under it.  The sequence then goes across the connector in the same way. You have to short out pins 4 and 6 which the picture you have incorrectly labels them as 5 and 6.  I think that's why it doesn't work.

Also, This connector is supposed to be the 56.5 thingy but I got fault codes that match the other kind.  I had to have the engine running for it to work but when I did, the light blinked code 12 "diagnostics initiated" then it blinked out code 136 "ECU".  I did some work on cleaning up the ecu connections and checking they were all on tight and the fault went away, suggesting the codes I got were accurate.

Did I get it wrong and if I did, how come it worked?

V6 will work with engine on or off. 2.0l requires ign on, engine off.

No need to be confused, Johnc. You've done it correctly.

nuclear_onion has a 94 V6, so I would expect, but can't confirm,
that he would have a version of Motronic, not a Simtec 56.5.

Also I can't work out how he's counting the pins to make 4&6 = 5&6  :-/
Or what this counting across the connector instead of lineally is about  :-/

Shouldn't matter if its pins 4 and 6 or 5 and 6, as 4 and 5 should be connected anyway.

as 4 and 5 should be connected anyway.

Ah! That would explain why some folk use 5&6 and some folk use 4&6.
It doesn't really matter.

It would also explain how 'nuclear_onion' got the Code 136 for his, I presume,
Motronic ECU using different pins?

Motronic uses same pins on diag socket as Simtec

Motronic uses same pins on diag socket as Simtec

Agreed. But nuclear_onion is counting the pins differently, and I think he
got the right pins to link accidentally because 4&5 are linked.

Hope I'm making sense here on what I'm on about.  :)

Makes sense.  Short either 4 and 6 or 5 and 6. 4 and have should be connected together anyway.

The link I put up before doesn't seem to work but this one should, http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm This was were I got my info from including how to work out how the pins are numbered.  According to them, the plug in mine is for a simtec but it must actually be motronic because out of the lists of codes for all the diffenent varients motronic were the only ones that matched what mine actually flashed out.  They also show different pins to connect to the ones in The Boy's picture which were the ones I used so it shouldn't have worked but it did and I have no explanation for that.

I did make a mistake about which number pins to connect. They put 5&6 NOT 4&6.  I just read it wrong, sorry.  Go check out the link and see what you reckon cos I don't get how they can get it wrong yet it still worked.

topbuzz does have a lot of inaccuracies....

v6 engines are motronic, 4 cylinder petrols are simtec.  All Omegas use the 16pin OBDII connector (though on post 2001 are actually OBDII protocol compatible).

Now it makes sense :)

I have a 2.0ltr 16v with the Simtec 56.5 plug and use the 5&6 pins, the other pins dont work on mine.
I just plug in the paperclip and turn on the ignition, then it starts flashing.

Now i have cleared mine, i just get the code 12 repeated, which is good..

Thanks, mark  :y
