Hi,
Just changed can belt on 1999 2.5 V6 and the new belt is a Gates. It has 2 double green marks, 2 single green marks, 2 double lght blue marks and 4 single light blue marks. The only way to put it on so that the marks lined up was to start with the double green marks on the crank, the two single green lines on cams 1 and 2 and the single blue lines on cams 3 & 4.
I've now turned the crank round several times but the marks on the belt no longer correspond to the marks on the cams. There was also a lot of resistance at times when turning the crank.
Has anyone else used one of these Gates belt with green and light blue markings?
Thanks,
Michael.

First did you use a cam " Locking Kit" ?
Second hope it not just the belt - did you change the tensioner and rollers?
-
Yes I used the locking kit and it was a full Gates cambelt kit.

Hi,
Firstly as said above it is best to do the tensioner and idlers at the same time, as these often fail more than the belt.
The resistance you felt would be normal because it is the compression changing in the cylinders as each cylinder goes through the compression cycle.
Not sure about the marks no longer linning up I would have thought that they wouldn't personnaly, as they didn't after I did my change and had turned it over a few times.
No doubt someone more knowledge able will be a long soon to advise. :y

You're fine. Mind you my Gates belt had white and yellow marks on it.
In fact you're lucky your belt had marks on it at all. Some belts (the genuine ones I think) don't anymore which is no help.
The multiple marks are to cater for slightly different models. In my experience if you found a set of marks that work you're OK, with the locking kit you're definitely OK. Once you've turned the crank the belt marks no longer line up and never will (well perhaps they might one day?!).
Gates belts are good quality.
As you turn the crank you should feel the engine compression so it will be much harder to turn at some points and almost easy at others.
To be certain check you can refit the locking kit when the crank is at TDC and then check the timing marks. If they all line up you're in good shape.

Thanks for the info on the markings. It all looks pretty good now with tthe marks on the cams, timing cover and timing tool all more or less aligned.
Does anyone know where I can get a 30mm ring spanner from. I've already tried Halfords and Machine Mart.

Don't worry - both the marks not lining up after rotation and the resistance as the cylinders go through compression is absolutely normal - you should see the tensioner adjusting as well.
As long as the timing and tensioner setting is correct after turning it over and you have torqued averything up correctly you should be fine.
BTW where did you get the Gates ket from?

Thanks, I got the kit from vauxcentre, romford via ebay.
Did you use a 30mm ring spanner for the pulley adjustment or is there another way?

30mm offset ring spanner required. I use a draper one, so most decent tool shops should have one...

Thank you.

You need a 30mm offset ring spanner. You can usually get one from an on-line tool shop or Ebay. I think you'll have to pay around £10 + P&P for it. It's a whopper!

Cam belt now changed OK but its idling at about 400 rpm - about 150rpm lower than before the change. Do you thinkl i've not put something back properly?
Thanks,
Michael.
