I have seen mention of using gasket compound (red Hermatite stuff?) instead of a replacement sump gasket.
Vx don't have the small sump gasket in stock and I want to get on with the job.
Can anyone who has tried this confirm its ok please?
Thx

Mark DTM suggests a sealent from Halfrauds Locktite brand.... If he comes along shortly, he'll surely enhance the facts...

Have you tried JPAT ?? http://www.jpat.co.uk
Very helpful and answered my questions within an hour, using there on-line query system

You can use the VX grey sealent on an engine sump, so I guess there's no reason it can't be used on a gearbox sump... if let to go hard afterwards.
I stand to be corrected.. and indeed the one from halfrauds I have used, and is good.

Loctite 598

Loctite 598
Is that in addition to new gaskets or instead of ??
I have a set of gaskets/filter on its way from jpat, so just checking what else I need ! :)

I have a tube of the Hermatite red stuff - is that similar?
-
2 gaskets 1 filter ordered from jpat by phone lunchtime Wednesday, just arrived, lunchtime Friday, total cost inc VAT & postage :
£35.61
Now that is impressive service :y

you'll also need a new sump washer after refilling and you're supposed to use threadlock on the sump bolts according to Haynes. You don't need the sealant if you have the gaskets.
- Can anyone confirm if red Hermatite is equivalent to the Loctitie 598?
Cheers,
Ian
