Ok my purchase has turned out to be a bit of a dog after the garage inspected it. This is what needs doing:
Rear brake pads
Rear brake pipes corroding
New windscreen (75 bucks on insurance)
Exhaust back box (small blow apparently, I didn't notice it)
Gearbox layshat noisy (argh! anyone swapped out a gearbox/got one for sale?)
Engine managment light on. (I'm going out to do the paperclip test now, I'll post the codes soon as)
I have decided to keep her and sort it out as she's only done 67k and in good nick otherwise.
Am I mad? Should I ditch it? Let me know what you think

pads and exhaust, std service items, so can;t complain. Get a TC card for cheap genuine bits from your dealer :y
Gearbox.... ....hmmm. May be worth replacing the oil in it, before condemming it....

Ok first tried with the engine off and got 59 129(?!!!) and 31.
Tried it with the engine running now I just get the 59, Intake manifold solenoid valve 1 volt high
I remember reading about this but I can't find it again, can anyone point me in the right direction?
I know its one one the solenoid valves on the variable intake system but which one and how do I test?
-
31 is summat to do with crank sensor, either knackered or standard as engine not running. its one of them. not sure about other codes.

Rear multiram not plugged in ;) - top right of plenum...

Nice one TheBoy! What dummy forgot to plug that back in!
Light extinguished
Ok I'm keeping it, but two more to add to the list:
Did I forget to mention the nearside cam cover gasket is leaking? Well I suspect it is, nice bit of oil smoke when the engine's warm. Is this the most likely diagnoses?
Also idling rough when warm. Not searching for revs, just lumpy. I'll look up the likely culprits now as I think I've seen a few threads addressing that.
Next stop halfords for a haynes and some gearbox oil.

I often go through monmouth, if you'd like a second pair of eyes / ears :)

take the HT leads out on the nearside bank, you may find the spark plug holes full of oil (I had that on my first omega ...)

If the blow on the back box is on the main part of the box, a viable repair is to cover the hole with a piece of steel / tin / aluminium, with a silicon sealant around it, and pop rivit in place. Satisfies the MOT as it is a mechanical repair and will save you best part of £100

It's a bit more expensive, but only buy genuine Vx rocker cover gaskets. Pattern ones only ast a couple of months.

I've a spare 2.5 manual gearbox. If you need it let me know and we can sort something out. I work in Newport.
