Last night driving home, when the gearbox went from 2nd to 3rd seem to rev high then finally changed into 3rd very roughly and the display said Gear-box check. Thought I would take the car out this morning for a slow drive see if I could find what was wrong but it seems alright now. The display reads normal and the gearbox seems ok. Has anyone had this problem before. Also forgot when it did finally go into 3rd it wouldnt change up or dowm had to drive home in 3rd. Many thanx in advance. :-/ :-/ :-/

Hmmmmm.....whats the cars mileage?
It sounds like the thrust washer problem in the box.

That is normal when box detects problem - its the gearbox limp mode. Restarting car will reset, however, is NOT a cure!!
First port of call is to change the atf and filters.

Indeed it does, but not heard of thrust washer going on AR25....

I recently went to change the ATF in my 2.5 CDX as a first port of call as the auto-box was playing up and when I took the front sump off there was the remains of the thrust washer :-( I now have to get the auto-box of my other miggy (which will be fun, not) and swap them. I did proceed and change the ATF as it'll be a while before I can do the swap and the problem is not as bad now (when it's behaving it's better than before), but it's obviously no cure.
So they do break on AR25's. It's done 130,000 BTW

Interesting, does seem much rarer on ar25.
Thrush washer not difficult to change if you can take box off. Remove bell housing, and its there...

Thanx for the help guys going to get the oil and filter changed on the car next week. The car has done 85k hoping its not the washer thats gone. I will keep you posted. :y :y :y

Had a diognostic done on the gearbox, Came back with a fault code and it was a problem with the ratios. The guy said the cure was fit a new gearbox, Price £1100 + vat. Going to see if I can source a cheaper one than that. Going to the pub now get the courage up to tell the enemy she wont be pleased. :'( :'( :'(

Code 8 - Incorrect Ratios is a common one, yet another case of incompetitence on part of 'technician'
Basically, the gearbox knows the input speed (via engine rpm signal), knows the output speed (via sensor), and knows what gear it should be in. If these do not calculate as correct, it will flag the code 8.
So, before writing off the box, at least check the fluid level in the old one!
(its possible that the plates are all worn on the box, but that is a gearbox off job to check)

Thanxs for the advice going to give that a go. Was a bit surprise that the cure was a new g/box,fingers crossed it wll work. Must admit the car has been ok since and I have been driving around town all week. :y :y :y

Change the fluid asap - if the box is slipping due to old or insufficient atf, the clutch plates will wear very, very quickly, then it will be replacement box.
