my 2.0 dti seems to be running hot. I have had a new thermostat/sender fitted and problem is still there. Temperature shoots up mainly when i am putting it under strain (ie up hills etc) The it seems to drop when i am on the flat. Temp can sometimes go up to over 100 !!!.
Somebody suggested that it could be the water pump
a - could this be right?
b - is it a difficult job?
c - is it an expensive job?

Have you tried flushing the coolant system???? You shoulsd be able to test the waterpump by looking in the header tank whilst engine is running, remove cap and look in the bottle you should be able to see the water coming in the small bore pipe. When you rev the engine the flow should increase, flow should still happen at idle all be it a bit slower. HTH.

Water was flushed and 50/50 mix added when i had thermostat/sender changed.
just taken it out for a drive and upon return with temp gauge @ 97 noticed that the fan is not kicking in ??
Any suggestions ??

fan doesn't kick in until it's up at nearly 100 iirc???

After you have been on a run let the engine idle, temp should rise and fans cut in, normally between 97-100ish, if they don't then you have a faulty fan switch or motor. You can check the fan switch by reoving the plug from the switch and shorting the 2 wires together, Fan should spin up, if not then check for the fuse first followed by the relay and lastly the fan itself. HTH.

Check fuse F51 as per the following diagram:
