After my post a couple of weeks ago I took the plunge and bought a new digital camera. In the end I decided to take Nickbat's advice and bought the Panasonic DMC-TZ2. There is a review here (http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-cameras/review/2007/03/20/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-TZ2/p1).
I also took Captain Zok's advice and went to the shops to buy it. Now, no offence Captain but that is the last time I suspect I will take this approach. I had done all my research and had decided which camera I wanted. I printed out a copy of the web page from http://www.purelygadgets.co.uk which showed the price at £170.95 plus £5 postage. On Sunday afternoon we drove into Truro, which is about 12 miles from home, and parked at a cost of £3.00 I made my way to Jessops, via several clothes shops to keep SWMBO and GB Junior happy.
When I got to the shop I had to stand around whilst the two staff on duty served the various other shoppers who were deciding whether or not to buy the black or blue camera case and whether to go for the £6.00 or £10.00 mini tripod.
When I eventually reached the front of the queue I told the assistant that I was interested in the Panasonic model on my printout and handed it to him. He gave it straight back to me and said, 'To be honest mate, we aren't going to get anywhere near that price'. As an afterthought he said, 'You can have a look at it if you want'.
I said, 'What's the best you can do'? As I really wanted to walk home with a camera on the day. 'The price is on the camera', he says. So needless to say, I went home empty handed and down about £15.00 in parking, petrol and junk food. As soon as I got home I logged on and bought the camera from purelygadgets.
On Monday I received an email to say that my camera had been dispatched and it arrived on Tuesday morning. Now, I wouldn't have minded paying a little bit more to take the camera away with me on Sunday but there just wasn't any interest to sell to me. The situation was worse in the electrical retailers as I never even got to speak to anyone there as they were too busy to even acknowledge my existence.
The moral of the story for me is. The High Street is dead, long live 'EShopping'.
Anyway, some pics from the new camera.
Wednesday on Dartmoor.

Dartmoor obviously on panoramic mode and the creepy crawly was using the macro mode. Considering it's a point and shoot camera it seems to have a lot of settings and the instructions are about 30 pages long. :)

Actually, macro mode is crap! The spider was 6" across. ;D ;D
Seriously, it was quite a big beast and there were not many blokes who had the bottle to pick it up. None of the women would even come into my office but then that's just a normal day. :-[

Looks like a nice camera. The reviews are very positive. I chose mine on the basis that I wanted something to fit in my pocket as that way I would be more likely to take it with me rather than leave it at home or in the car which I am inclined to do with my SLR.
Hope Mrs Crazydad has a nice birthday. :y
