Post by: paul.c on 15 September 2007, 20:35:20
i might have the chance of xenon h/lamps. do the facelift ones fit pre-facelift and does anybody know if its a easy job. do they just plug in or are the plugs different. if they have self levelling can i just ignore it and ajust them manually. thanks :)

If you haven't got them already you will need the power packs for each headlamp.

Are they xenon or projector? Xenon have a ballast pack on the rear of the unit, if they do then you will need to get some wiring done for them to work.

Facelift and prefacelift are different.

Also, as has been stated several times before, legally need automatic levelling (so get sensors, ecu and loom), and a washing system (so get all the washing stuff from the donor car).

TBH, better just to stick with projectors and better bulbs, unless you fancy this amount of work (and it is non trivial)

No, they are required to get the lamp to start.

Others will be able to answer best bulbs, but the +50 type seem to be well received in the posts I've seen...

Hi, as an experience the route with original ones are expensive as there are many parts to fit.

I use philips aftermarket kit which is really superior to the original ones ..  (I dont have lenses)

I compared with original xenons in the night and originals are weak compared to mine...

To do properly, in the UK, you need to have an auto levelling and washer system, which the aftermarket type do not have.

Additionally, when comparing, remember newer bulbs are brighter than those with a few hundred hours use on them...

I think the lenses affect..Mine make the street like daylight :)  Also manual leveling is not that bad..

I didn't think the facelift projector h/lights were different from the pre-facelift projector h/lights?

Me and The Boy have got a bit of a thing running with the legality and practicalities of aftermarket HID headlights  ;)

Facelift into prefacelift? Physically I don't think they will fit very well  :-/ One of the main differences is that facelift has washers in the bumper and pre has washers set in the panel below the lights.

Personally I cannot recommend Philips 50% 'Vision Plus'  :( Lots of glare for traffic in front and not much improvement.

I've commented on this too many times anyway, my HID's are great and don't cause any glare. I would only have them fitted in projector lights though.

Have been using Philips Vision +30% (when that was the best they did) and +50% for many years, change them every 12 monthts, and can report they are much better than standard bulbs. (application: 1999 my with projector lamps).  They do create a bit of glare for the car in front, but in normal circumstances I have the headlamp levelling switch down 1 level, then move them up to the zero setting when someone is hogging the 3rd lane of the m/way even when not o/taking anyone....they get out of the way like Moses parting the Red sea.

What I don't like about the Philips bulbs is that the +80% "X-treme" bulbs aren't available in H1 format, even a year after H4 and H7 came out, and Philips UK advise they aren't likely to bother doing so anytime soon.   >:(

Might move to a good set of aftermarket HIDs, but have the usual problem of the silver reflector being loose within the h/lap (both sides); this is fine with normal bulbs (passes the h/lamp alignment test in the MOT each year), but reckon the weight of the ballast and extra wiring might move the reflector too much, so would have to shell out £100 for a pair of new pattern-part h/lamps off ebay before then buying the HIDs.

The Hids will glare a bit when they get a bit mucky...
