Title: Wiper fun
Post by: AndersH on 25 September 2007, 13:57:35
I was driving in the rain yesterday and my wipers crossed each other and one got mangled!
I turned them on again with the blade of the driver's side taken off and the passenger one just kept going past where it should. I then pushed it back into place and now it sort of seems to work ok - although it is bashing against the bonnet. Does anyone know what could have happened and does it sound bad?
Cheers!

It sounds like the nut that holds the wiper arm on has come loose, so the wiper arm has now let go of its spline drive....

Yup...happened to me on a mk3 Cavalier. You'll probably need new wiper arms now, I'd be surprised if they haven't gotten bent.

its worth removing the plastic cover and tightening the nut ( if its still there)

13mm on your socket and re align them and see how they are, agree you may need new ones but its worth checking first.

If the wipers crossed over each other or touched it's not just the taper spline from the wiper motor that's come loose, that would just leave them both stranded on the screen somewhere - but still sycronised with each other. A link between the arms has failed somewhere.

I have just replaced the damaged wiper and reseated both arms and all started ok, they then got out of sync and crossed over again - any ideas?  :'(

Hi Andy, looking at the bars which attach the wipers to each other - all looks ok to the untrained eye. The top bar does rock forwards and backwards on ball joints over the bottom bar but it doesn't feel wrong... Running without wiper arms looks fine as far as I can tell...

You need to have a good look at the splines for the wipers to see if thet are damaged/worn and the wiper arms are slipping on them. THey may have been damaged when they first became loose.

Take the whole lot out & have a proper look. If it's FUBAR'd just swap it all with one from the breakers.
