Title: Loss of acceleration (tractor)

My 2.5 diesel will accelerate quickly  :y up to 75 mph (4000 rpm) then will not increase speed unless I accelerate gently but then it won't go over 95 mph! Any ideas what I should be fixing? I don't want to use the car's top speed but I do need to rely on it getting up to speed when I want it to!

Check fuel filter (near expansion bottle) as a first port of call.  Some diesel injector cleaner as well.  Has it been serviced properly - remember its a 4.5k MAX service interval....

Thanks. I have just run through a bottle of injector cleaner but I will check the fuel filter next.
I have heard there is a vacuum pipe to the auto box. Could that affect the problem?

No vacuums to autobox.

The fuel filter should be changed regular, and have the water drained very regular (hence the drain on bottom of filter) - diesel tends to trap water, and water will badly score the injectors...

Sorry. Just noticed your location and it brought back some memories. I used to be a member of the gliding club at Wormingford when I was at uni in Colchester '89-'92.

Thanks for that comment. I wondered what the clanking noise was! :-/ Perhaps I should change my name to Mr Plow?  ::)

Anyhoo ... I have changed the fuel filter but I still get this sudden loss of acceleration. Could happen anytime above 3500 rpm but is not predictable.
Anybody got any ideas on what I should check next?  :(

Inlet hoses tight, not leaking under boost?

More to add, I have been towing a trailer with a good load (1/2 tonne+) and I still get the symptom of losing acceleration but this time it was at low speed (40 mph) going uphill out of a Welsh valley loaded. Lots of power for 5 secs. then no more! Does anyone think I have a problem with my low pressure fuel pump?

Omegatoy is the man, but worth checking the inlet for leaks, and check the EGR is OK.

You're talking to someone who learnt cars before they had overhead cams! :-? What's an EGR?

Exhaust Gas Recirc - an emission thing so that on cruising, it lets exhaust gases (inert) back into inlet, thereby in effect reducing cylinder capacity.

On TD, EGR valve is on front of inlet - the bit behind the large rubber pipe behind the 'Turbo Diesel' plastic. It has a small pipe that goes in front of the engine to the exhaust manifold.

Try Forte diesel injector cleaner, but put it in the diesel filter, drain out the diesel in the filter housing first, add in the Forte and replace the filter. Run the engine as normal, this will clean the injectors alot more than sticking stuff in the fuel tank. Yes the engine will run fine on the Forte ;)

sounds like the pump in the tank isnt keeping up with demand from the injector pump? when it hapens and you release the throttle does it then tke a few mins to run properly again?

It recovers quickly, within 3-5 secs and then will accelerate but slowly. :-?

Ahhhhh never read that bit, then i am inclined to agree with Omegatoy in that the fuel pump is not keeping up with demand :(

Problem no more!  :y I had the error codes examined which lead to the MAP sensor. This had the vacuum pipe off. It looked like it was on but was not connected and covered in oil. Quick clean up, reconnect the pipe and now I can lose the boy racers again  :P

As you say. the computers on cars these days can make it a little difficult to diagnose faults
