is this because they have gone 'yellow'?

You've got 2 options
- clean them up - I found Tcut worked surprisingly well, others on here have used wet and dry paper (wet) followed by Tcut.
- buy some 'projector' headlamps (these are a straightforward swap) from a post 98 car.  I wouldn't bother with the 97 ones unless the car is really a model year 98 with the projectors which don't go yellow in the same way.

Yes, they would fit but they will not pass an MOT in the UK (or shouldn't) as they are manufactured for use in Canada and as such, are for LHD applications.  The inbuilt adjusters only flatten the beam and do not convert to RHD.

(note to self - really must finish that howtoo and post it up...   :-[ )
