My 1996 3.0 MV6 was a pain in the arse yesterday. It cut out all of a sudden with the engine management light on. So I pulled up and called the AA. In the 30 minutes it took for them to arrive I tried the car a couple of times and eventually it struck up again, the light went out and it sat idling, sweet as a nut for 30seconds until the light came back on and the engine died again. The AA bloke was about 12 and didn't seem very experienced. He couldn't get the diagnostics to read, but after much fiddling with wires and consulting his laptop he came to the conclusion that it was the Crank Sensor at fault. After a lengthy tow back home I struck the car up again. And it fired perfectly, first time and sat idling for 5 minutes before I shut the engine off.
So does this sound like a Crank Sensor fault to the knowlegable members of the forum, and if so could someone show me where to find the part number (bearing in mind this is quite a rare 3.0 MV6 for the year, being ex-police, but I assume my engine is an X30XE) and where to source another sensor. Also are they as easy to fit as they look to be.

Does sound like the crank sensor, do a paperclip test and see if you get a code 19
There is a maint guide on how to replace as the original cable routing is flawed, so follow Mark's replacement route.

Cheers, just found the guide for replacing it. It appears the most important thing ti to identify which sensor you need first then... I'll have a ferret about in there. Other thanthat it doesn't look like too much of a bitch of a job.
Also what code would I be looking for on a paperclip test for a faulty crank sensor?

1st guess would be a 19, but post up any codes you get

Does sound classic crank sensor, similar to when mine failed in France a couple of years back - car cut when engine reached temp.
Do the paperclip test, and post up result before buying one though!

hi, i had same problem,went all the way to gloucester 120miles with a 18ft tourer,got on site,payed my rent ,went back to car it was dead,would not start,i had no idea what to look at ,any way after about 45 mins it started ,no problems,travelled all the way back home,took wife to work next day,it died on way back at traffic lights ,what a nightmare,had to push it out the way ,and leave it,i were there no mobile,got to phone box ,when i got back it kicked up,didnt go very far,four times it happened,i were knackered ,battery went flat tring to start it ,cost of new one 40 notes lol,not many knights of the road round our way,my son came n towed it back,put paper clip to read code ,came up 19,crankshaft sensor,not a difficult job,you have to reroute the cable away from any hot areas n tie wrap it ,omega running like a dream now,hope you get it sorted
