I now commute via one of these... :) - Its got a cafe on board, and you get free copy of the telegraph news paper every day :)
Thames Clippers have also just taken delivery of 4 new versions of the one shown in that picture, the new ones have a bar on board :D
Its a 5 min walk from my new flat to where this boat docks, its then 50 mins to Embankment where i get off, and its 5 min walk to the office.
No one is allowed to stand on the boat, so its a much, much nicer commute. I also get an extra hour in bed!!! :D

Sounds very civilised Tunnie. How long would it take on the tube?
I agree, it's nice to start the day with a nice relaxing journey to work. I would hate to have to go back to city commuting.
-
...out of intrest what sort of cost is involved in that commute?
-
nice!
-
From one barge to another ;)
-
well its longer and more expensive than the train.... but a heck of a lot nicer.
Tube cannot do from where i am, DLR will be near my flat in 2009 but that goes the wrong way really.
Via train i can walk to the station (10 mins) then 35 mins on a packed non-aircon train...
Where as the boat is air-con, always get a seat, and get fab views.
It winds its way though the Thames Barrier, around the o2 Arena (the dome) and various other sights, it really is a nice way in. Boat is fast at pulling away too.
Train is about £120 ish for a montly season. (Zone 4 Oyster)
Boat is £152 takes 50 mins, but its only a 5 min walk to the dock, a monthly 'season' is a 40 trip pass, 1 way = 1 trip. There is a 3 months unlimited season which works out at £135 ish per month, i will take that as soon as the new boats come into service. Only bad thing its not zone seaon so only works on the boat, but i don't use the tube anyway...
Currently its commuter hours only to my stop, but soon its going to run all day and all weekend.

Sounds great, unlikely to be disrupted by strikes, bomb scares, jumpers and other annoyances. Lets hope, for your sake and your sanity, that it doesn't get too popular.
I'm glad that you've found a little haven of tranquility in what I consider to be a total 'nut house'.

Happy days Tunnie, a far more civilised way to commute in town. Far better than being crushed and delayed on the tube system, and for only £15 more per month :y
-
Nice 8-)
What does it rev to? ;D

Its certainly more appealing than a train through the east end of Glasgow to get to the city centre. Now thats nasty, ghastly, scarey and well i`ll leave it there ;D
-
Looks fun but I'd go the powered 2 wheel route
-
...Boat is fast at pulling away too.
So next thing you'll be water skiing to work ;D ;D :y

I am tempted to bike it when the weather gets better... its a fair treck, almost 11 miles, further if you just follow the river.
I used to bike 5 miles each way to uni, so need to get some practice in!
-
What happens if the Thames barrier is up ?? do you get a refund or just have to walk/swim further ?? :)

Aye but is that using its "Sports" button and is it an auto ;D

I love it, but then my "city commute" is a 10 minute walk. It has the added advantage that my "partying commute" at weekends is even less than a 10 minute walk ;)

But Tunnie, the train would mean even more time in bed.... ;D
Glad it sounds like its going well down there :y
BTW, you got a sofa I can kip on in a few weeks one night? Better still, do you offer a taxi service from Clerkenwell area ;)

Just looked on google maps, you bang in the centre there.
I have spare bedding, i and should have an air-matress as well (camping one) your welcome to kip down mate, the living room is big so lots of room to sleep in there.
Depends how late you are comming back from the centre..... sod me being a taxi, can't stand driving in London.
You can either take the boat from Embankment to Woolwich Arsenal, or the train from Charing Cross.
Boat is far nice, but i can imaging you screaming at the captain to get a bloody move on! ;D

Our 'team meetings' (not that the company will pay) tend to be in that area, and as you know its a bugger getting back here... ...probably about 11pm ish - not late as others have to get back to Luton/MK/Ipswich etc.

Kevin
;D ;D ;D ;DIs it RWD?

:)I cross the Thames in my truck on the Woolwich ferry sometimes. Nightmare if only one ferry running & always takes longer on the way back up, Hence the large waiting are south of the river.

At the moment, the boats do not run that late to Woolwich, but that may change in the next 2 weeks.
Train is prob best, either London Bridge or Charing cross to Woolwich Arsenal, its about 30 mins on the train. You have to walk though chav town woolwich to get to the flats, its not the best area, but its ok.
You can then take the boat with me in the morning back to Embankment, then go on your merry way....
Is it a mid week thing or a friday thing?

Now you have to look at this a different way Tunnie.....
Get a taxi there.....pick TB up and Taxi back.....and charge TB double the price the Taxi costs you..... ;D ;D :y
