Hi guys, drove my 2001 2.2 cd to the supermarket this morning and all was fine. When i came out and started the car the eml light stayed on and the car was shaking. When i pulled away the car seemed to have very little power. Don't live far so i drove it home.I lifted the bonnet and the engine is shaking back and for and sounds really rough. Anybody got any ideas? Car was fine yesterday. I recently had the cambelt/pulleys changed if that helps?
Many thanks in advance.

Need to read the codes.
Check for water/oil in the plug wells.

This sounds familiar, I have just finished sorting mine out after experiencing the same symptoms. I code read mine and got a miss fire on cylinder 2 code.
Basically oil had leaked from the rocker cover gasket down into the spark plug wells and fried the plug.
I replaced the rocker cover gasket and plugs and all seems fine now.
While I was under the bonnet I decided to clean the breather pipes and the throttle body but this was not related to my miss fire.
My advice is to remove the plugs and inspect them and the wells for signs of engine oil :y

Thanks alot, will try that this week!

Thinking about it the blocked breathers do cause the rocker cover gasket to leak as the pressure builds up in the rocker cover and eventually forces oil passed the gasket.
The worsed breather on mine was the metal vertical pipe coming off the sump which is connected to the rocker cover by a rubber hose. This was solid with crud and took quite a while to clean out. If you haven't cleaned the breathers yet I would suggest doing so.
Only buy genuine Vauxhall gasket (aftermarket ones don't last long) and the ten O rings which fit in the underside of the cover where the bolts pass through.
Have you got access to a code reader as it is always best to confirm the problem before throwing money at it? :y

I'd take it back to the garage that did the belt change and get them to check the timing is spot on - if not a number of sensors could pick up the fault and force it into limp home mode as you describe.
Code reading can cost £40 a time so ask them to read it and post the results here for best advice - don't assume the "engineer" knows what he's looking at :y

The guy that did the cambelt change works for vauxhall, so he has got access to a code reader, and i'm assuming he did set up the timing properly because the car did run fine after he'd changed it??

I wonder if P0340 is gonna be mentioned.......then we know what it is.....dont we AA ;)

:y OH YES :y

What does that mean?

This was the miss fire in cylinder 2 fault code :y

Actually P0340 means cam sensor ;) And is quite prone to fail on 2.2's.....it gives hot starting problems :y

Thats P0302 :y

:y That's the one I had, not P0340 :y

I started the car this evening and the problem had gone, but eml still on. Turned it off and started again and problem was back again. Does this sound like this fault you are taking about? How do i get rid of it if it is this cylider 2 problem, is it a new coil pack, or someone has mentioned a crank sensor?
-
My fault was intermittent when it initially happened and then I couldn't start the car because I had flooded it and run the battery down. As I explained earlier I cleaned breathers and throttle body, changed rocker cover gasket and o rings and changed the spark plugs. She has been fine since :y
I would get it code read as the eml has stayed on and this will tell us exactly what the problem is.
Post the fault codes on here when you have them.

Have you checked yet for oil/water in the plug wells?
Does sound a bit like cam sensor problems though.

You need to get codes read before considering next step...

The codes were reading misfire in cylinder 1 and 3, so took the plugs out and they weren't in good condition. They looked like they had burnt oil etc on them. Replaced the rocker cover gasket and fitted new plugs and all seems fine now, eml light gone off too! Many thanks

keep an eye on the plugs regularly for a while...

Did you clean the breathers at the same time? If not the cam cover seal will likely go again shortly..
