Title: Adding Cruise control 2.5 TD
Post by: Pitchfork on 29 December 2006, 19:25:13
Previous cars (Mazda 626, Honda Accord & Volvo V70s) had this & after 3 yrs without I still miss it
Can it be retro-fitted to a '96 2.5 TD Estate (BMW engine)? If so how easy is it?
Regards
Ian

Yup, plug and play on 25TD...  Fit the stalk and away you go :)

Note, the BMW 2.5TD takes a different cruise stalk to every other Omega - it needs to be the 2 wire cruise stalk...

Wow- what a fast response!
I don't suppose you know the VX part No. for the 2 wire version by any chance?

Have found the engine No.
30808544
Does this help to tell which engine type it is?

Looks like chassis number is one you want, and you should be able to work out from above part nos... :)

Also check eBay for stalks, they can go cheap on there.

Double check which engine it comes from, as they don't always say.

I fitted a cruise stalk to a '95 TD Estate, just change the stalk and its job done  :y

Problem with 2nd hand stalks, is that these stalks tend to fail as they wear, causing all sorts of probs, mainly with full beam coming on when not required...

True. Some people must just abuse them, that one i took of a scrapped Carlton CDX worked a treat  :)

The extra weight of the cruise a stalk probably doesn't help....

And to quote Marks_DTM last time mine failed "It shows you use your indicators properly" ;) - apparently, the indicators wear a small slot in stalk, which cause the main beam to be on a hair trigger...

You would need the engine number, not just the VIN.

If the last handfull of the VIN equals the engine number (most cars do) then looks like the first one....

U25TD, X25TD T1000001-  9181012 12 41 221 1

The important bit seems to be T1000001- where the '-' means onwards.  The VIN does not reach the other end of the range where the next starts at X25TD  -11999999

Just reread....  Now I'm as confused as you!  It appears that your VIN will fit between both...   ::)

NEXT LUCKY ENTRANT PLEASE!!    ;D

Car first Registered Oct 96
Does this help with identifying what engine I have & which Cruise Control stalk I need??
Surely someone must know!

UPDATE
Well, I went to local VX dealer in Basingstoke who assured me that there was only a single cruise control part for the 2.5TD (Part 9181012) & that I an XD motor so.....
I bought a used control on e-bay, fitted it & it works beautifully (only a couple of minutes to fit if you ignore Haynes' instruction to remove the Steering Wheel).
Now I know that some of you deride what you call 'Tractors', but I'm impressed by the fact that, as was mentioned by another member, adding Cruise was as simple as 'Plug & Play'
Got me to thinking, are there any other similar updates for this model, where the features are already programmed in the ECU, & only require the appropriate component to enable them?
I'm keen to improve the fuel consumption, is there an add-on or a recommeded chip upgrade intended to do this rather than turn the car into a F1 contender?

Sorry, I'm a big culprit for referring to that diesel engine as a tractor engine  :-[

Glad you got the cruise going - it is really easy on that model :)

Quite a few upgrades possible using ebay bits to the car, not much for engine though.  They can be chipped to good effect (Omega 2.5TD is heavily detuned), one of your fellow tractor owners will no doubt advise in that department (apparently OmegaToy's TD goes like a rocket with a chip and another 'secret' mod).

Yup.  Has to be the diesel cruise stalk as different to more common petrol one. Also, if manual g/box, you need a clutch switch as well :)

LOL.

I'm actually a diesel fan, just not that impressed with the one in the Omega (or same engine in Landrover, or in BMW)

A Vauxhall Dealer would be the best place... they are a good price around £30 ish... 2nd hand ones can be dodgy.

Petrol ones £30 + VAT from dealer. I assume diesel about the same...

I would be wary of second hand ones...

thanx for that, just been told about a chip on ebay to boost mine from 143 to 177bhp approx. is it worth doing on a 97 2.5 td with 159000 on the clock ?

omegatoy chipped his, and its very quick.

If its a manual, yes chip it. Auto's... ermm personally i wouldn't. The autobox would not handle the extra torque for long....

New Cruise control is £37 +VAT
I have an Auto so it's as simple as swapping the indicator stalk. Just make sure you get part 981012
Even if the used one that I got on e-bay fails, it's cheap enough to replace (I wonder why it was never standard?)

Now - how about mods to make it more economic  on fuel? I don't need that extra Horse Power!

The autobox is not BMW, only the engine is  :y

The autobox in the diesels is not the strongest even with standard power... although post '98 i belive it was fitted with a better box (AR35?) Not sure...

Yes, the g/box is a GM unit. Earlier ones had the AR25, not really strong enough, and usually end up failing. Later ones had the AR35 as fitted to 3.0/3.2 petrol, much stronger.

I do not know when the cutover was from AR25 to AR35...

The Diesel is a drive by wire system (no throttle cable) so its the engine ecu that controls the diesel pump electronicaly.

It uses a BMW management unit, this uses a set of resistors to signal which button is being pressed on the cruise stalk and hence the stalk is different to a standard Vauxhall one (and why there is only 2 wires).

2.0/2.2 Diesels use the same stalk as petrol models.

I found this out to my dismay  :'( when i bought a cruise control stalk from fleabay that would fit "all omegas" >:( >:( >:(, lying b!!!ard.

Yes, 2.5TD uses the unique 2 wire stalk (£30 ish from dealer), all other Omegas use 4 wire stalk.  Due to the cheap price new, and the high failure rate as they get older, its false economy to buy 2nd hand...

Fitting will take no more than 5 minutes
I bought one on e-bay for £5 & it has given no problems
Cynically, I suspect that not fitting it as 'Standard' meant that dealers could charge £100's extra for the feature when the car was ordered new

Keep an eye on full beam coming on or flashing unexpectedly...

I think they did it to keep model range consistent. Remember, the non dbw petrols needed actuators etc which were costly, so only fitted to cdx and elites...

if your not sure which cruise control stalk to get, take off the cowling behind the steering wheel and fish out the plug , it will be on the left hand side.

if its 2 wire, you need cruise stalk part number 9181012       12 41 221 1        (IDENT BK)

my tech jockey in the opel garage said this is the ONLY one for the tractor.

FYI, the cruise control stalk for the BMW TD is resistor operated instead of switch based for all other omegas, i whipped out my digital multimeter (calibrated) and got the following values. all vales are in ohms.

nothing pressed       670[ch937]
0 pressed              1680[ch937]
I pressed               61.2[ch937]
R pressed            155.3[ch937]

info may be usefull to someone.

For Omegas, the 2.5TD takes the 2 wire variant (with the resistor network), and all others take the 4 wire type...
