Title: Squeaky noise from front of engine bay.
Post by: mgrolimund99 on 23 October 2007, 13:06:44
Anyone have an idea what it could be? Last night I thought it was the cambelt tensioners but they were replaced 10k ago by Vauxhall garage. Has been making this noise for a while at startup but much quieter, but last night I went a little faster than normal.. ;) and as I drove through my village at a sensible speed it was making a noise much louder in fact seemed to get even louder by the time I got home. My paranoia tells me its something to with the cambelt as that appears to be where its coming from so I havent driven it today. Got a mobile mechanic to take take a look this coming Thursday but now I confused what it could be. Its not a fanbelt noise, more of dry metal type noise, engine full of oil..... anyone heard of this thing before?

Did you get the waterpump changed when Vauxhall changed the cambelt and tensioners? If its coming from the front of the engine it could be a number of things, auxilary belt tensioner, power steering pump, aircon pump, alternator. Does the noise speed up and slow down with the engine revs?

Er good question. Called Vaux this morning to ask what is done with cambelt change they said its a kit and includes the tensioners , not sure if the ones you mention are included in that.

Could be the secondary air system.  Does it go away after a minute or so?

or the aux belt tensioner pulley.  You can slip off the aux belt and run for a short while (only a short while as that is driving the water pump).

its not so bad if the water pump is not changed with the V6 as the water pump is on the AUX belt on the 4 pots its on the Cambelt so if the water pump fails major style it can rip the cambelt off. I know from my omega if the water pump is not replaced every other time the new cambelt and tensioners will knack the old water pump in a matter of weeks with the new cambelt and tensioners being tighter.

But since your on a v6 you dont have this problem

Take the aux belt off and run the car and see if the noise dissapears, if it does then you need the aux belt tensioner and can be fitted without too much bother. If the noise is still there then it is either the water pump[£25] from vx or the cam belt rollers are making a noise, and you need to make a vx warrenty parts claim on the cam belt kit. :-/
