Title: Smelly Diesel
Post by: Boiler Man on 23 October 2007, 10:28:37
Hi Guys

Can anyone help me with a bit of advice?

I've noticed occationally a slight smell of hot oil after parking up and walking past the front of the car. :(

I know diesels have a reputation for being a bit smelly. But I never experienced this with my last 3 diesel motors.

I've noticed a slight staining around the rocker cover gasket.

I've seen posts about cleaning breathers on Pertol engined cars, on the site and that a leaking rocker gasket is a tell tail sign of them being blocked. :-/

1. Do 2.2 DTI's have them?
2. Do they need regular cleaning?
3. Where are they and how do you get them off?

The cars an 03 2.2 DTI and done about 120k.

Any advice would be appriciated. :-/

Hi mate. I'm not familiar with that particular model but I can give you a few pointers in respect of diesel motors.

Firstly, the injection system on diesels operates at much higher pressures, therefore my first port of call would be to check all the unions on the pump through to the injectors. You may have a slight leak somewhere and if it's particularly anywhere near the engine it will stink.

Hows the performance and mpg? This may indicate that a service is due i.e fuel filter, oil change ect. Hope this helps and I bet It's something simple.......good luck.. :y

Cheers for the replies guys :y

Re: - The fuel joints, it does smell more like hot engine oil rather than hot diesel, but I'll have a look for any small leaks. thanks

Re: - Service had oil and filter changed but it's is still there now and again after engine reaching full temp'

Thanks Again :y

Could it be breather problems?

with referance to diesel smell it might be worth checking the leek off pipes { rubber return pipes ] as this is were the fuel returns to the tank  :)

Boiler Man,

The rocker cover breather is via the hose that taps into the air intake just before the turbo and is the reason the intake hoses and intercooler have a film of engine oil in them, nothing to clean but the hoses now and again.

There is oil staining around the front of the engine on mine and it seems to be common on all 2.2DTIs why, I haven't a clue and it's not bad enough to worry about. Check under the ECO TEC plastic cover on top as oil can lie in the channel on top of the rocker cover if any has been spilt when filling up, as I found out last week, and this also may be the cause of the staining around the engine but has still to be fully investigated.

Diesel smell - check around the filter area, driver side wing just back from the turbo, especially if the fuel filter has been replaced or even drainedof water as any diesel spilt into the engine bay wil take ages to dry out and stop smelling.
